Will my op be cancelled

Posting here for traffic. I am less than 2 weeks away from a keyhole hip op. Due to incredibly heavy menstrual bleeding related to stopping first month of HRT v suddenly, I am now anaemic and on oral iron tablets. I am also taking transexamic acid. Am I being completely U and over the top panicking that they will cancel the op? I am usually otherwise fit and healthy and this bleeding is unusual for me. I am trying to rest as much as I can but really worried.

All non-essential ops at my SIL’s hospital have been cancelled for the foreseeable due to covid-is that what you’re worried about?

You need to speak to your doctor OP, no-one on here can really tell you.

RyanReynoldsHusband · 21/08/2021 22:39

Why would you want to go ahead with an op that could be dangerous for you?

Have you had your pre op? If you have they might not check bloods again before the op

ELOU1111 · 22/08/2021 17:26

Pre op nurse here...bloods will be done at pre op. If you are looking anaemic (different thresholds for every surgeon) the nurse will ask the surgeon and anaesthetist if you should be cancelled until bloods stable. You will know a day or two after your pre op whether the op will go ahead.

ELOU1111 · 22/08/2021 17:27

By looking anaemic i mean if your bloods show anaemia (not literally looking Grin)

The bleeding began heavily after the Pre op... I'm actually waiting for someone to call me after calling 111 it's still going and I feel a weird pressure in my pelvis. I don't feel right - very dizzy. I think hip op may be last of my worries right now.

take care, hope 111 help

If you're still bleeding heavily and now feeling light headed, please go to A&E.

Ambulance came out yesterday and said stats are ok. Feel like downward pressure internally now. Bleeding light abs watery and non stop. Not flooding like other day but just isn't stopping. Bright red. Dr calling apparently so will see what they say. Can't drive and definitely don't want to take kids in with us.

I had surgery a couple of weeks ago and afterwards I was told that my pre-op bloods showed I’m anaemic, so they go ahead in some cases at least. The bleeding sounds more concerning.

Sorry to hear you are unwell. I'm sure the doctor will order repeat bloods. You would have definitely been contacted by the pre op team if you were dangerously anaemic with the bloods done in clinic but obviously after a heavy bleed your blood picture may have changed. If you still want surgery my advice would be to ring the pre op team and speak to the nurse you saw. She will then contact the gp who will send over a copy of the bloods taken following this bleed which she will pass on to the surgeon who will let you know whether or not they will operate. In these days of complaints and law suits in my experience if it is surgery that can wait (I.e not cancer or life threatening) they will err on the side of caution. Been a pre op nurse past 18yrs and this is how it works at the NHS hospital I work at. Hope this helps and you feel better soon x
