To ask if you're squeamish?

I was just about to help DD put a feather in her scrapbook, cut the end and realised it was all squishy and bloody inside (even writing this makes me cringe). I can't stop picturing it and genuinely feel a bit sick. Have binned it, but I'd like to know how to stop feeling this way!

I'm not terrible with blood, but don't like needles. Not good with big spots/pus. How do I snap out of it? Can you toughen yourself up to visceral stuff?

Reassurance needed, advice and tips appreciated. Can't stop picturing that bloody feather.

YABU- don't get squeamish, put your big girl pants on.

Haven't RTFT because... I'm too squeamish to read all the disgusting things people are likely to post! LOL.

I think just about everyone is squeamish about something, just different things and in different situations. My student DC has one particular household task they would do almost anything to avoid. At our house I am happy to take that one on instead. I suggested that they be open with the new housemates about it and offer to do extra turns on other duties if the housemates will do that one. To me, it is a very minor and straightforward thing!

OTOH certain piercings do me in. I am really really glad none of my family or close colleagues/friends have such piercings. I'd probably have to do a course of CBT to teach myself to tolerate them.

If there is something specific and unavoidable which bothers you hugely, you might consider CBT. Otherwise... just avoid it whenever possible!

I used to be squeamish about handling raw meat. When I started raw feeding my pets, though, I had to get used to it. I think I started off just doing it with gloves on and doing the less unpleasant bits, but I soon graduated to cutting sternum in half etc and I don't bother using gloves now - I admit I am still paranoid about washing my hands properly afterwards. The other Christmas, I took the innards out of the turkey, I think my mum must have been asking me something about the heart previously, so we dissected it and I showed her the different features.

I love gore!

I do not like vomit, I don't deal well with that, but everything else- the gorier the better!

Ive always been squeamish but yesterday had to step up to the plate. I found a rabbit whilst out with the dog that was screaming in agony laying on its side, when I looked more closely its eyes had been pecked out. I have never killed an animal but I had to do it. I spent yesterday afternoon crying and still keep replaying the incident. In some ways I feel more confident if I had to do it again.

Sorry Ive probably upset some of you now

ValidUser · 21/08/2021 10:39

@thereisonlyoneofme that's so sad. Poor rabbit! Hope you're feeling okay after that.

Not really no, I love gory horror films etc.. but the feather thing is a bit grim because I’m wondering how germy it is..

Oh I feel for you, you’re very brave as my cat had caught an already injured bird so I had to put it out of its misery and that was bad enough. You stopped it’s suffering so please don’t feel bad for that.
