Can I ask you to guess what the date was on this bit of broccoli I am hoping to have for my dinner?

Looks fine

PlanDeRaccordement · 20/08/2021 17:57

Bit too brown for my taste.

LimeSodaTwist · 20/08/2021 17:59

1 August?

SofaSpuds · 20/08/2021 17:59

I don't pay any attention to BB dates on veg, they don't come out of the ground with BB dates. If it looks OK I eat it, if not I don't.

Billybagpuss · 20/08/2021 17:59

Nothing wrong with that, starting to turn so maybe tomorrow?

PeonyTime · 20/08/2021 18:03

12 August?

When we lived abroad, some stuff had a packed on date. Helped with stock control, but didnt tell you when it would automatically switch from safe to unsafe to eat!

Ostryga · 20/08/2021 18:04

Dunno but I’ve managed to keep broccoli for 2 months before it went yellow.

I never check the dates on anything. Just smell it and check for mould. Very rarely throw anything out.

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 20/08/2021 18:07

Over the years I’ve had veg which went beyond it well before its sell by date, and plenty which was good long afterwards.

I shop at Morrison’s and they now label veg with Display Until dates only, leaving me to decide when I’m happy to use it - which to be fair to myself, I always did, but it should at least avoid people who are more wedded to Use By dates chucking it unnecessarily.

MinkeDinkie · 20/08/2021 18:07

Oh I quite like best before dates on veg - it often means it gets massively reduced when there is still plenty life left in it :)

sayanythingelse · 20/08/2021 18:08

I'm guessing a couple of weeks past it's date.

Looks fine to me. I never check the dates on fruit and veg. Just go by look and smell.

ISpyCobraKai · 20/08/2021 18:09

Who knows, but I ignore them anyway and use common sense.

I do think a lot of food is wasted by silly dates though.

user1473878824 · 20/08/2021 18:09

I’m confused, why are you hoping, it’s fine?

I assume it’s well past the date on the packaging

Forstarters · 20/08/2021 18:10

It probably was ‘better before’. Now it’s a bit brown. It’s not a use-by date.

And that’s a really odd thing to get angry about yes.

Goofers · 20/08/2021 18:11

Looks soft and past its best, maybe the 14th?

cariadlet · 20/08/2021 18:18

No good at guessing dates but I'd say that it's a couple of days past its best. Still absolutely fine to use. Were you thinking about throwing it out instead of going with your original plan and having it for dinner tonight? That would be pretty wasteful (and completely unnecessary).

tempcheck · 20/08/2021 18:22

Frozen veg all the way for me. No waste, just use what you need. I live on my own so it's perfect. Nice soups too when I gather the dregs in the bottom of the various packs.
Storing fresh veg is a pain too in my "bijou" ha ha kitchen! I have a decent size freezer though.

BareVanilla · 20/08/2021 18:24

I would be eating that today as I don’t like waste. Was the date 2/3 days ago?

purplecorkheart · 20/08/2021 18:24

I recently bought toilet paper with a use by date. I really wish I was joking. I would use the broccoli

FusionChefGeoff · 20/08/2021 18:35

17th July GrinGrin. A whole month out!!

I have very low standards and always push dates on normal food let alone veg. But this is stretching what even I would expect from broccoli - and it was Aldi!

Roasted it with chilli and garlic and was absolutely delicious!!!

I’ve got no time for dates on veg. If I’m adult enough to be allowed near sharp knives and hot things then I can work out if some veg has gone off.

Unfashionable · 20/08/2021 18:39

YABU.

It’s a best before date, not a use by date. Anyone with more than three brain cells understands the difference and proceeds accordingly.

Ooooh! I only steam or boil broccoli, roasted with chilli and garlic sounds yum!! Any recipe to share?
Mantlemoose · 20/08/2021 18:51

God, I'm a smeller - if it smells fine it's fine. I don't read dates on anything. Never had food poisoning.................yet!
