Refusing to end subscription in writing, can they?

I struggle with talking on the phone due to hearing impairment, and lines being open in working hours, I normally get someone to help relay the conversation a bit if I can’t hear. I avoid phonecalls as much as possible as it always ends up embarrassing to with asking to repeat/ missing info and mix ups.

I have a subscription with The Times newspaper they refuse to end it unless I call. They say they must actually talk to the account holder, why I don’t know as they don’t know my voice personally and I can add any required info in writing. Can they do this? It began in writing. It just pissed me off on principle tbh that I can’t use a reasonable tool of communication, either post, email or through the online account. Lots of notice for them before the contract at its end, in writing I can do it independently. I hate having to drag others into calls when it’s not necessary and get approval etc (don’t start me on people refusing to talk if they think they are on loud speaker for ‘security reasons’ even if you assure them you are alone on your house phone).

Short read; can a company ignore you through all lines of communication except the phone, when this wasn’t clear at the outset?

I've just had similar with Plusnet. Came to the end of my 18month contract, internet service hasn't been that great so decided to try another provider.

Went online to do it and there is no option to do allow it. All attempts bring up the same message to call them to speak to an agent. To be fair they did accept the cancellation without too much hassle, but it annoys me that when you need customer service from companies like these for faults or queries they push you to online self help or faqs or web chat. No chance of speaking to an actual human then.

It’s not a credit agreement so just cancel the DD. People postcode lottery did the same, just cancelled DD. Send them an email informing them if you must.

The Telegraph have a similar system, so I just cancelled my direct debit, then ignored their e-mails. No disability here, just better things to do with my time.

Had it been me on the phone I think I would have expanded that I was also tired of their vacuous middle class waffle. Some columns have made me crack a bit, waffle about dogs or cycling short journeys etc

I think I’m happiest never contacting them again!
Strangely though my account gave the end of November as the earliest possible contract date he did it on the spot, no access from the end of the call! At least that’s a plus

I have a similar problem. I wear a hearing aid. Fine mostly except on the phone.
Dd who is an adult at times has had to say she is me just to get round the red tape.
Dh usually speaks on my behalf, he tells me that I have to tell the person on the other end that I give permission for them to speak to him.
As for drs that does my head in. There is no system for those with impaired hearing. At the moment it is just impossible and I need to see a dr , ( but they only working with phone ones) dh phones but they need to speak to me, and I hear only the odd random word and cannot answer properly. I just get nowhere.
Sorry I have no answers I wish I had. Given so many young people wear hearing aids I don't understand it.
The only good thing is when nuisance calls ring. I tell them sorry I cant hear and they hang upSmile.
Hoping that you find a solution.

I always assumed cancelling in writing was the ultimate legally enforceable way of doing things. These companies trying to cling on to customers by making it extraordinarily difficult just tell me they're the exact company I'll never do business with. I never hold personal grudges, but the moment a company fucks me off they're on the shit list forever.

Email on 21/8 saying it was cancelled, end of contract- immediately ended access to the online paper.
24/8- took £28 from my account

Me too - Virgin and the RAC are two recent examples, although to be fair, after I tweeted RAC they sent me an email address to use.

It's insulting when they won't accept the same method you signed up with for cancellation.

It is so sad that the humourless dead-brained cunts act this way though. They don't even seem to have a sense of humour about the ridiculous nature of it.

The NYT is the same - when I decided to cancel an online only subscription that I had purchased online I had to cancel via phone - and I am in New Zealand so I had to work around time zones.
The first person who answered ‘couldnt process’ my request so I had to be transferred to another department - who never answered. When I finally found the will to ring back I got transferred through to the right department but was subjected to a seemingly never ending series of ‘best offers’ and a 30 minute interrogation as to why I could possibly want to cancel. It was a nightmare.

I am sorry to read they have on top of the ludicrous process not even put your request into effect - it’s outrageous. I hope you can solve this via email.
