To set up a crowd fund to pay for my post graduate degree?

I don’t have the funds to pay it and am currently living on a low income, topped up by universal credit.
I know the post grad loans are £11,500 or thereabouts, but that’s to pay for course fees AND to live on Sad without help, I won’t be able to do it. I want to improve my job prospects, specifically for my toddler son, who I don’t want to end up going without, particularly when he starts school.

Well, there is no harm in trying, I guess. The question is whether people will want to help. Do you really need a master's degree to improve your job prospects? What's it in, and how will it help you progress?

jclm · 19/08/2021 23:45

Can I ask what is the post grad qualification in? Is it essential for your intended career that you have this? I think many students are duped into thinking post grad qualifications are necessary to get a good job.

MurielSpriggs · 19/08/2021 23:45

I don't see how it can possibly be unreasonable, no matter what your circumstances. If people don't want to pay they won't.

AngryWhompingWillow · 19/08/2021 23:45

You've got nothing to lose. Good luck! Smile

CraftyGin · 19/08/2021 23:46

What is wrong with your first degree that it doesn’t enhance your prospects?

What are you going to contribute to the body of knowledge, and therefore to society in your post graduate degree?

Draculahhh · 19/08/2021 23:46

It doesn't hurt to try, but I would be extremely shocked if you got that amount. There are so many people begging for so many things now a days.

What can you do with the post grad that you can't achieve with your under grad?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 19/08/2021 23:47

I going to be brutally honest and say that this isn’t something I’d contribute towards.

AlexaShutUp · 19/08/2021 23:47

I would add that I'd personally be unwilling to contribute to something like this unless there were really exceptional circumstances. I would prefer to contribute instead to help people who can't currently access education at all.

A master's seems like a bit of a luxury, but who knows, you might find people who are willing to cough up some money.

WorraLiberty · 19/08/2021 23:47

I wouldn't give to a crowd fund like that and deep down I'd be thinking 'Cheeky fucker'.

But if you think people will happily give then go for it.

BashfulClam · 19/08/2021 23:48

You can try, I wouldn’t donate to a stranger for this reading but others might.

WorraLiberty · 19/08/2021 23:50

Yes but some people who know her might judge her/think she's a cheeky fucker.

If she's tough skinned enough to not let that bother her (and hopefully she is) then it's all good, but still something to consider.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 19/08/2021 23:50

SCORES of women with or without children would love to improve their educational prospects and enhance their careers, however a post grad is a luxury when you’re already educated at degree level. I’d honestly be wondering what made you think you are so special that other people should pay for you to achieve this?

Bagamoyo1 · 19/08/2021 23:50

Am I missing something here? Why should other people pay for your further education? Can I crowd fund for a shiny new car?

DelphiniumBlue · 19/08/2021 23:50

I believe you can get a loan to fund a masters these days. But if you can get funding another way then give it a go.

Booboosweet · 19/08/2021 23:51

Give it a try. Will the degree not enable you to get a job?

AngryWhompingWillow · 19/08/2021 23:52

I see no harm in it. I have seen people crowd fund for boob jobs and holidays for them and their kids before now. Cheeky, and I wouldn't give anything, but some people do.

Yes is the short answer.
Howshouldibehave · 19/08/2021 23:52

I wouldn’t pay for anyone’s PG unless it was someone who was close enough family that they lived in my house.

What is it in?

GreyhoundG1rl · 19/08/2021 23:53

I wouldn't dream of contributing to something like this for a complete stranger, tbh.
How specifically would it improve your job prospects? It seems an indulgence you just can't afford at this point.

jgjgjgjgjg · 19/08/2021 23:54

Presumably you already have a first degree? So why are you living on a low income and benefits? That means you definitely aren't a high flier careerwise. Do you actually have any high quality relevant work experience? Why is a post graduate degree really going make you suddenly so much more employable??

musicalfrog · 19/08/2021 23:55

Sorry but while people need money for urgent medical procedures etc this wouldn't be something I'd contemplate supporting (even for a friend).

Kite22 · 19/08/2021 23:57

I can't believe the cheek of people who set up crowd fund requests for their own personal benefit.

Surely they are either for community projects, or for some specific tragic circumstance (for example I've seen them for funeral of a young person that was killed in tragic circumstances).

Just 'wanting something you can't afford' seems like a very high level of entitlement to me.

pinkcircustop · 19/08/2021 23:58

No harm in trying 🤷‍♀️ People don’t have to contribute but some might want to.

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 20/08/2021 00:07

I wouldn’t donate as I had to take out a massive private loan from future finance for mine, as a single parent on benefits, so I would think you should do exactly the same if it’s that important for you and your child!

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 20/08/2021 00:08

Afaik the course fee loan is separate from the living costs loan and as a single parent you will still be eligible to top it up with some benefits.
