Reading a current thread about being woken up, as if it’s an emergency, reminded me…..

DH and I were in a holiday to a tiny greek island. It was just just before the holiday season started, so it was really quiet and relaxing. I was 4 months pregnant, we had a great time. We took a boat trip out to the island where they filmed Mamma Mia. On the way there I took a nap (I’m not good on boats at the best of times), I was suddenly shaken awake by DH, I genuinely thought there was a problem and the boat was sinking (seen titanic too many times)………. The reason for his rude and violent awakening (exaggerate much!!), there were dolphins swimming with the boat and he didn’t want me to miss them!

They were spectacular and with the rude awakening.

When have you been on the receiving end of a ‘gift’ but wanted to ‘kill’ the person giving it?

I can sympathise with the Princess Diana stories. My parents were hosting my Great Aunt's 70th birthday party that day, so people were travelling from all over the country to be at our house for lunch time.

I wasn't even asleep I was actually on the toilet when my mum burst in. "There's been a terrible accident." The look on her face, I think my brother is dead. "In Paris." I don't know anyone in Paris at that time. 'Princess Diana is dead." Phew, compared to a member of my family on M5.

Though half the country went mad then, to be fair

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 20/08/2021 01:16

Sorry to digress the thread but yes it was so WEIRD the over dramatic outpouring of grief! I read a few years ago that this is a specific effect and people mourn for famous deaths or infamous tragic events who maybe didn't mourn for other things in their past. But the sight of wailing people grabbing the two straight faced teenage boys who'd just lost their mum, and saying how upset they were about it all, makes my blood run cold

@Howshouldibehave

There are only two reasons to wake a sleeping person
  1. Telling them it’s snowing
  2. Telling them that a famous person has died.

Proper true

Snowing? not where I live. I would be woken up way too often. Maybe if it's the 1st snow of the season and I'm napping, but not after I've gone to bed.
Fiero · 20/08/2021 01:29

I woke up my husband to tell him abbot Brexit

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 20/08/2021 01:30

My mum woke me to tell me the princess of Wales had died. I thought she said the prince of Wales and was momentarily shocked in case we were in a constitutional crisis but couldn't really summon much response when she said it was Diana.

I was 20 and on holiday from uni so regularly didn't surface before lunchtime.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 20/08/2021 01:33

No point waking someone to tell them a celebrity has died. They'll still be dead in the morning.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 20/08/2021 01:34

@VienneseWhirligig

My family let sleeping dogs (me) sleep through an amazing drive across a road that split the sea, and past the actual Black Pearl ship. I've never forgiven them, would have loved to be woken up Grin
When I was around 5 my small town was having a big fireworks display (very rare back then for them to do this). I fell asleep before they happened and my parents did not wake me up to see them (I'm pretty sure I had never actually seen any fireworks in my life at this point). I was so upset when I woke up in the morning. I'm the same as you and wish they had. I'm almost 54 and still upset with them for not waking me up (well, just a little bit upset, but it still hurts haha)
endlesscraziness · 20/08/2021 01:41

Diana = what's the point (though I still remember it)

WTC- you'd better wake me up for that historical moment (especially poignant as I was 6 weeks from joining the RAF!)

toopoliticallycorrect · 20/08/2021 06:05

I suffer from migraines and take myself off to bed in the hope of getting rid of it.

Before now my husband comes into the bedroom and starts calling out my
name as he wants to make sure I'm ok.

Makes me so angry as I need to sleep it off and it's taken me ages to get to sleep.

After my response last time, I don't think he'll be doing it again quickly!

Brimorion · 20/08/2021 12:38

@KilledByWitches

My mother woke me up to tell me Princess Diana had died

@Brimorion exactly what my MIL did to me, only I was 8 months pregnant with DD at the time. I was distinctly unimpressed and like you had no interest at all really.

Mad, isn’t it? I should say I’m not even British and this wasn’t t in the UK.
Mrstamborineman · 20/08/2021 13:01

@endlesscrazinessndless What is the poignancy of joining the RAF . I don’t get that .

memberofthewedding · 20/08/2021 13:07

One of the great things about living alone is that it is very difficult for people to wake you! I don't keep a phone in the bedroom for this reason.

Tangledtresses · 20/08/2021 13:16

Years ago..... I had a 2 month old baby so not much sleep. Went to a spa day with friend had an amazing massage and was tucked up fast asleep in the relaxation room... friend woke me me up by pinching my leg to tell me she was going for her massage. Never forgiven her for that

MissKeithsNeice · 20/08/2021 13:26

I was 9. My sister was 7. My parents took us to the opera - first and last time. My lucky sister fell asleep. Some children came on stage - part of the cast, not panto style Grin

My parents woke my sister up to show her and she promptly remembered where she was and burst into tears.

Later on in the performance, she learnt that she could flip her eyelids inside out Confused

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/08/2021 13:27

Back in April we were moving house. Recieved multiple phone calls from my mother on the A1 when I couldn't answer my phone. Thought it something serious so rang back as soon I could...
Prince Phillip has died. I get it was a major news story... but he was 99 so hardly a surprise.

I also once had the joy of trying to wake my drunk DH as there was a major emergency on the island we were living on (military coup just across the border). It took a few goes to actually get through to him it was important and it wasn't a joke.

toocold54 · 20/08/2021 13:51

I agree!
I’d have loved to be woken up and I’d be annoyed if he hadn’t woken me up!!

If it’s something I’m going to miss e.g. dolphins = wake me up.

If it’s something that’s not going to change e.g. a celeb dying = let me sleep.

applesandoranges221 · 20/08/2021 13:58

My nan woke me up the evening I got back from my Silver D of E expedition - we had got soaked, not slept etc etc: she woke me up to have my favourite dinner which she had lovingly made. So amazing of her but not appreciated by teenage me one bit.

Polmuggle · 20/08/2021 13:59

Would you really have preferred to sleep than see dolphins?!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 20/08/2021 14:03

Spending a fortune on whichever restaurant it is in Disneyland Paris where they have all the Princesses for my DDs 7th birthday. She was exhausted from a couple of long and hot days and every time one of the Princesses interrupted her dinner and I took a photo her face pretty much said 'Fuck My Life'!

We gave away most of the bespoke cake to other dinners as we couldn't possibly eat it all.

Gutted and hundreds of pounds poorer.

Knittedfairies · 20/08/2021 14:05

My son, then aged about 4, woke me up by opening my eye by my eyelashes and asking 'mummy, are you in?' I can't remember what he wanted though.

ThisOldSaddo · 20/08/2021 14:09

Also home at the 'rents house when Diana died. Mum woke me and I said, immediately in a sleepy haze "and Dodi too?".

Weird.

Lemonyfuckit · 20/08/2021 14:13

I woke my DP up (to be fair in the morning time when it was time to wake up anyway, not in the middle of the night) to tell him when Trump got in and when the U.K. voted for Brexit. I'm not allowed to wake him up with bad news anymore, which I suppose is fair.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 20/08/2021 14:13

I would have been cross if DH hadn't woken me up in these circs but I love dolphins!

Lemonyfuckit · 20/08/2021 14:18

I agree with the snowing one, no complaints from me if someone were to wake me up to tell me it's snowing. I will never stop being excited by snow.
