If I regularly run 10k, can I prepare for a marathon in 2 weeks?

I've been offered a place in a marathon in 2 weeks time, which I want to take, but realistically, I am not sure I can finish it within the time limit ( 6 hours)

Any advice on diet and training to give myself the best shot?

So do you finish your ultras? Which ones have you done just out of interest?

ones without a "finish" - you just run as many laps as you want, so you just stop and start and carry on as you feel like, and leave when you have had enough.

I haven't done one for a long time though - only done 10ks recently

*No, I've never had a policy, turn up, trundle around until I've had enough, eat what ever is available on the refreshment tables,

as I said, I have never been a serious runner*

Running ultras makes you a VERY serious runner in my book! They are 40 miles+ usually?

Not sure what to make of you, OP?!

If you really do 'trundle' round ultra courses with not a care in the world, relying on refreshment tables, then fair play. I don't know any ultra runners who don't carry their own water and fuel, and they are on course for far less time than you suggest you would be.

I hope you are genuine. I have my doubts, but if you are I'll 100% be cheering you when you report back on your unprepared marathon success Grin

Bold fail 🙄

54321nought · 20/08/2021 21:01

I haven't done an ultra since before covid, and I haven't done a proper marathon, with a route, and a destination, for several years before that. Actually, I don't think I have done a marathon with a time limit ever

Thanks!

If this marathon works out, then I would like to look into doing some "proper" ultras in the future, 50 and 100

But don't worry, not this month!

seriously , not even this year ....

You need to really build up to ultras. Those loop ones are fine but if you're out on a course 45 miles in and no-where near a checkpoint you will need a bit more about you. Especially as it starts to get dark and you're in unfamiliar hilly woods.....

trebelclef · 20/08/2021 21:34

Does anyone fancy a general chatty thread about Ultras for those of us who need a bit of planning and strategy to get through them Grin?

Just trundle round with some orange juice, it'll be fine Grin

I jest. I 100% won't be joining an ultra group, as I'm not hardcore enough a runner, but I think it's a lovely idea.

exactly, loop ones are easy. I've never even set out to run an ultra, it just happens

shrodingersbiscuit I know it is so sad. I went out and did 20 miles today and he would have absolutely loved it but I just daren't risk getting stuck with him if he faultered. Tbf autumn and winter is easier as cooler and puddles everywhere, I miss him so much and he looks so sad when I pack all my stuff ready for an adventure Sad

@trebelclef - the food at Reading has been good, but there can be long queues. We use the pizza van on Friday night, then self cater after that, until we finish on Sunday morning when we have a bacon roll from the main catering tent.

I saw the storm at Leeds on the FB group. It looked horrendous! I was camping that weekend, and we had a storm, but nothing as bad as you had.

I'd like to do the Leeds one, but it's too far to drive back afterwards when you've had hardly any sleep. Reading is nearer for us, so we'll stick with that one next year.

TheWholeWorld · 21/08/2021 17:19

Another Endure fan here. Didn't love the replacement course this year, much prefer Wasing. But the actual location of it was lovely. Always done it in a small team, but I do quite fancy giving a pair or solo a go one day. We're not serious/fast runners but have discovered that if you have someone on the course all the time you can do pretty well leader board wise.

Completely agree about this year's Endure. It was kind of nice that it was flat, but it was booooring! But such a lovely setting. Those poor people having their wedding though - not sure a running festival was quite what they'd have chosen to see and hear from their expensive island venue.

trebelclef · 21/08/2021 19:03

There was a wedding Shock Oh my! The poor bride.
