Covid refund?

Weepingwillowtree · 19/08/2021 20:37

I booked to go on a beauty course (£1500) but unfortunately caught covid and had to self isolate so missed it. They are refusing to issue a refund. Am I being unreasonable to expect a full refund?

It depends on the terms and conditions. Was it non-refundable?

ShinyMe · 19/08/2021 20:49

What did the terms and conditions say?

Squirrelblanket · 19/08/2021 20:54

Why do you have two threads about this?

pinkcircustop · 19/08/2021 20:55

Why have you posted this twice? YABU. It’s not their fault you for covid.

From the other side. I run a swim school. One day before it started, one person pulled out of the course because they were pinged. I still had to pay for the pool hire, lifeguard, insurance, staff, equipment, admin staff to book them on. It made no difference to my overheads that 5 people did the course instead of 6. They insisted on a refund, threatened bad review etc. It meant I got paid £1.70 per hour. Yabu.

Did you read the terms and conditions?

The course still went ahead, with the associated costs to the organiser. Much like live events, refunds would not be given if you didn't turn up, the reason for your non-attendance is not relevant. They may be able to offer a credit if they feel generous. Did you give them very sbort notice? If so, they may not have been able to resell your place.

I think they should refund, their T&Cs will likely cover them though.

All this will lead to is people not isolating if they can get away with it.

arethereanyleftatall · 19/08/2021 21:27

Or @HunterHearstHelmsley, it leads to hundreds of small businesses having to close down because they can't cover overheads with less people paying. It's shit all round. £1500 is a very very high amount for the op to just kiss goodbye to. But, it's either her, or the business owner who has to.

ShinyMe · 20/08/2021 17:03

Are you coming back OP?

Weepingwillowtree · 20/08/2021 17:29

Had some great advice messaged to me and also went to CAB - they said I was entitled to a refund! Will let you know what happens.

Apparently contacts that can’t go ahead due to self isolation are “frustrated” and should be refunded…

Was gonna say to read this! You're legally obligated to self isolate if you've caught covid, so you are entitled to a refund of the course in full minus any part of the contract already received.

Teacupsandtoast · 20/08/2021 18:00

Why can't you do the course on an alternative date? Will they not transfer the booking?

donquixotedelamancha · 20/08/2021 18:09

My understanding is that it doesn't always mean a full refund. If the vendor has incurred costs then they are entitled to deduct them from the refund.

Frazzled2207 · 20/08/2021 18:14

I’m not sure you’ll be entitled to a refund but you should be allowed to transfer to a different date

My understanding is that it doesn't always mean a full refund. If the vendor has incurred costs then they are entitled to deduct them from the refund.

However, where they have already received something of value, consumers should generally be expected to pay for it and they will not usually be entitled to get all their money back.

I take this to mean something either tangible, or teaching/learning delivered before the course. But they have to have received part of the service.
