I'm asking for a friend. Her 11 year old DC developed it over the past year and is pretty engrained at this point.

She is looking to hear from anyone whose DC has had an experience with this and the strategies/support that was most helpful in reducing it.

Thanks

Mine decided she had it at 11. Became a complete pain at the dinner table. I let her eat alone mostly but required politeness and no complaints when eating together eg Sunday lunch or restaurants. I didn't make a deal out of it. She then seemed to develop/ claimed to develop a condition each month for a bit, emetophobia was one, trichotillomania another. Too much Google if u ask me. Has calmed down a lot now 13.

DD has very severe Misophonia and misokinesia DS moderate Misophonia both diagnosed

For DD it was life altering, hasn’t been educated in a school building since she was 12 and is now 18, DS copes at school and is 17

If your friend takes a look at Newcastle university they published a piece of research about 3 months ago that finally identifies why and how it happens, we are a volunteer family for further research as I am also a sufferer

Strategies white/pink and brown noise
Good noise cancelling headphones, We have Bose and apple in ear
EMDR can be helpful
PROZAC can also help for the severely affected
EHCP for specialist education, DD has been educated at Interhigh by our Local authority which allows her to control her environment

My dd has had it for a year. It significantly impacts on our home life, as although it started with her being affected by my eating or sniffing, she is now triggered by me breathing (however silently) and speaking. It's very distressing. She's been on a waiting list for ages for support. She wears earphones a lot, and I've just ordered her some airpod pros for noise cancelling.

I'm on a Facebook support group for parents of kids with miso. Most seem to be in the USA. It's hard to see how many people are living with this, with no obvious signs of improvement, but it also helps to know that we're not alone, as it feels very isolating and I dont really tell people in real life.

I have this and have since I was a child. I don’t really have any strategies other than I find it easier to hear eating when I’m also eating. The other day someone was on Radio 1 doing a live lounge and she made mouth noises as she began singing her some and I had to slam the off button on the radio. It important to remember that it’s not just being contrary, it brings up a feeling of pure rage inside me that I can’t really describe.

Thanks all, that's really helpful
