To consider becoming a Brownie volunteer?

My DD's brownie pack has lost a few volunteers during COVID for various reasons. They've asked parents to consider volunteering for helper and leader roles to mitigate the risk of the unit closing.

Would I be completely mad to step up to the plate? Anyone who has experience of the commitment or what it's like to do the roles? The good the bad and the ugly!

Why would it be unreasonable? If you want the club to be available for your dd and have the opportunity and time then step up. I've helped at Beavers and it's amazing, great fun. It's not like a classroom as all the children want to be there and generally enjoy the activities. My dd's brownies they do craft, sports, picnic etc and the leaders always have fun too.

Volunteer and enjoy it, it's lovely to be involved and get to see you child in a social relaxed setting.

I’ve volunteered with rainbows, brownies and guides for nearly 20 years - have loved every minute of it. It’s very rewarding to see shy quiet girls develop and grow in confidence. I would encourage you to go for it

Do it! It will be a lot of fun. Talk to the current Leader about the amount of time and preparation involved.

Anordinarymum · 19/08/2021 13:12

I did it when my daughter was involved and I loved every minute of it.

PieceOfString · 19/08/2021 13:12

I know someone who did it for years and loved it. She has said that some parents can be a pain in the bottom but unless you're the sort of person who would take that personally (she isn't) it's not the end of the world cos you get taht in whatever you do.

Well I am a teacher so I have a First in pain in the bottom parents Grin

I have volunteered with Brownies for many years and really enjoyed it. Give it a go!

It's your choice how much time and what level you want to do. You can be an occasional helper, or go the whole way and become a full on leader. Initially can a few of you help out on a rota basis by way of an introduction to it all. I love being a Brownie leader but it is a lot more involved than just turning up once a week for an hour

itsstillgood · 19/08/2021 13:18

I've been a Rainbow and a Guide leader ( not now) and covered odd Brownie session/special event. I loved it. Don't be afraid to draw your own lines regards commitment and say no to things, but it is great fun.

Icecreamsoda99 · 19/08/2021 13:53

It's great fun as long as you're not the guider-in-charge. I loved my time doing it, but the Brown Owl had the hard job of dealing with difficult parents, subs and planning.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 19/08/2021 14:25

Fuck it I'm gonna do it. Someone has to keep these things ticking over! And I LOVED Brownies as a kid and always wanted to be Tawny Owl maybe I'll achieve my dream Grin do they still called leaders Owl?

yay - hope you find it rewarding. :)

Eileen101 · 19/08/2021 14:50

Definitely do it. We need all the leaders we can get.

Leaders are usually still owls. Other options are available but all the units I've come across use owls.
