Quitting new job after 2 months. Help me understand this!

Hi, I'm quitting after 2 months, because of many reasons. I want my last day to be 1 September. I just don't know if I have to give 4 weeks notice? Im still under the probationary period.

This is what my contract says:

  1. Probationary Period
New employees will be required to complete a 6 month probationary period, which commences on the date of their first shift. During the first 4 weeks of employment, your probationary period may be terminated by either party without notice. Thereafter your employment may be terminated by either party giving not less than one week’s notice in writing.

Because I'm resigning during the probationary period, it's just one weeks notice right and not 4 weeks? I just want to make sure before I have the conversation with my manager on Monday so he can't tell me to stay longer. He is very manipulating.

I read that ad one week’s notice.

Heavymetaldetector · 19/08/2021 12:36

One week's notice yes

SoapyChoc · 19/08/2021 12:36

Yes I agree 1 week notice

Catsrus · 19/08/2021 12:37

No - your contract says that during the probationary period you don't have to give notice - you can walk out today.

If you try to give notice for 1st Sept they can insist you leave now.

so if you want to go now then go. If you want to go on 1st sept then tell them then.

AFTER the probationary period you have to give a week.

Catsrus · 19/08/2021 12:38

Ack - sorry - thought you were within your first four weeks! Yes - a week.

CoastalSwimmer · 19/08/2021 12:38

You need to give one week's notice.

KittytheHare · 19/08/2021 12:40

I think you’ve misread the op Catsrus

iwant2resign · 19/08/2021 12:42

Thank you, I'm going to tell him on Monday. Someone else wanted to resign last week but he apparently "refused" their resignation and want them to stay longer, can I give a handwritten letter or does it have to be emailed or something?

Yes 1 week. Make sure you confirm in writing you are giving 1 week notice as per your contract and your last working day will be 1/9. If they are likely to be awful I would just give the week no more.

Always makes me wonder when they say things like ‘refused my resignation’ like what.. just use your legs and walk out then don’t return. If they’re that obtuse a reference isn’t exactly going to be valuable.

You can give them a letter.
Although if you think he may be manipulative about it like you've said then I think I'd cover my back and also send an email at the same time. Just so he couldn't claim he never got the letter or anything.

And yeah it means you need to give minimum 1 weeks notice which is usually standard for the probationary period.
He can't refuse your resignation, if he tries to tell you he is just tell him you won't be coming in after x date when your notice is up

newnortherner111 · 19/08/2021 12:57

Why not tell your manager today? Get it out of the way, probably less likely to have an adverse reaction than at the start of the week.

iwannascream · 19/08/2021 12:58

If you put one weeks notice in a letter and email on Monday 23rd of August your last day of work would be Friday 27th of August.

If you need your last working day to be Wednesday the 1st September I would be handing in my notice on Wednesday 25th August.

Send an email- then you have proof of what you sent should there be any issues.
