Getting upset for my friend thinking I'm crazy for watching Alex Jones/David Icke?

zenithfreedom · 19/08/2021 08:39

So I have a very 'unique' YouTube history. I watch all sorts of random stuff. Doesn't mean I believe most of it but it's interesting nonetheless. From 9/11 conspiracies to prank calls to documentaries, and commonly conspiratorial figures like Alex Jones, David Icke, Max Keiser

I gave my friend who has been staying with me since lockdown my tablet to watch something since hers died and she couldn't find the charger. She saw David Icke and thought I was a bit insane and was worried about my mental health.

I said it's just entertainment but I also took a bit of offense to the fact that she thinks I'm mentally unstable for watching these guys. What do you think?

  • So you'd not have any concern and be totally fine if your friend spend all their time watching neo-nazi propaganda or something.

And not wanting to be friends with someone is not policing them.*

That isn’t what’s happening in the op.

If a friend was watching neo nazi videos relentlessly, then I’m sure that I’d already be aware of her beliefs and obvious deterioration in mh before stumbling across them on an iPad. I’ve already covered that with ‘behaviour spilling into real life and impacting friendship’.

Otherwise none of my business.

And not wanting to be friends with someone because they have watched something you don’t like, when it is having zero impact on your life, is an odd way to go through life , but as you are.

Meraas · 19/08/2021 21:06

@ShinyMe

Me too. Watching that crap once is bad enough, but to watch more than one, for FUN? You say you don't believe most of it... so you believe SOME of it? It's a slippery slope.

Also, the more watches they get, the more they start believing themselves and being able to say that they have x many followers and the movement grows, and other gullible people can say 'but look, this has xyz many views, there must be some truth in it...' and it all grows more.

She said she doesn’t believe most of the random crap she watches, not that she doesn’t believe most of the conspiracy theories.

Don’t misrepresent what OP said, that’s not fair to her.

You might not know if she didn't tell you, especially if she was apparently only watching them for fun.

And I dont find not wanting to be friends with someone who watches vile videos for "fun" all that odd, but at least you've stopped claiming its a form of censorship.

Ancientcistern · 19/08/2021 21:10

Alex Jones is barely a step above White supremacists.

DerAlteMann · 19/08/2021 21:45

OP! At last I've found someone who shares my sense of humour! BTW DW shares your friend's opinion.

What a strange and incredibly low bar to set.
A person being a paedophile might have "zero impact on your life" but are you truly going to remain friends with them? Honestly?
Same with a racist that believes all Jews should be sent to the gas chamber. It might have "zero impact on your life" but are you truly going to remain friends with them? Honestly?
How about if someone like Jones believed that the parents of the Sandy Hook children faked their own children's deaths and deserve being trolled, abused and receiving death threats? Hey, it has "zero impact on your life", so I guess those grieving parents deserve to receive death threat calls and abusive letters and have their house vandalised, told their children deserved to die, but are you truly going to remain friends with them? Honestly?

I question the morals and base level human decency of anyone that tries to justify all this as 'not affecting me so who cares', as you are doing, and set their bar so incredibly low that they'd only think of cutting ties with a friend if it directly affected you personally.

Iloveginger · 19/08/2021 22:32

As explained, none of my business what people get up to in the privacy of their own homes unless illegal, paedophilia would be classed as an illegal activity.

I have watched a few David Icke videos and I looked up Alex Jones earlier, strangely I remain unaffected. Instead I am knowledgeable about the opinions and beliefs of people that differ to my own. While also appreciating that I live in a country that gives me the freedom to do that.

And twisting my comment about someone viewing legal material, which is evidently having 'zero impact' on anyone (the op has explained she watches for entertainment purposes only) into to me not caring about anyone or anything and having no moral compass, or human decency is quite a leap. Hysterical much. Fucking hell.

So you are now twisting it into 'legal' vs 'illegal' now, to JUSTIFY your low bar stands. Fucking hell is right. How hysterical, how DESPERATE that you have two twist like a pretzel to justify watching videos and giving hits to such despicable views.

Just listen to yourself! Your twisting, moving the goal posts, your utter desperation is pathetic. ConfusedHmm

SamiReed1 · 19/08/2021 22:40

Either you have morals and base level human decency, or you don't; either your were raised properly or you weren't. If you twist yourself into a pretzel to justify staying friends with someone with no moral values or human decency, you don't and you weren't.

It really is as simple as that.

Iloveginger · 19/08/2021 22:45

Its also none of my business what my friends choose to watch in the privacy of their own homes, providing its not illegal.

Taken from my post Thu 19-Aug-21 19:24:17.

I think its clear who the hysterical one is here.

The op has a sense of humour? Must have missed that. The op is a wind up merchant.

Yes, you were talking about views and values. YOU then changed the goalposts to legal vs ILLegal. I don't give a flying rats stuffing if it's legal or illegal. That is NOT WHAT THE TOPIC IS ABOUT, so stop twisting yourself into a pretzel.

When that wasn't the topic. You've shown how utterly desperate and hysterical you are.

Iloveginger · 19/08/2021 23:14

Yep. Keep going. Lets see how 'not hysterical' you are.

I’m a little surprised by the outrage on here.

Surely reading conspiracy sites is no different to people loving and watching serial killer documentaries on Netflix? (Not something I watch but I know loads who do)

Just because you watch or read something doesn’t mean you are being dragged into a cult (or planning to become a serial killer)

Surely most (if not many?) people are critical observers and discerning in their reading and can watch/read a wide range of topics for both enjoyment and information?

I agree it is not great to financially support people (with clicks) who have extreme views but it is good to consider all sides of an argument. We shouldn’t cancel people just because they have a different view to our own.

Equally I wouldn’t disown a friend who watched something I didn’t agree with! That’s like disowning a friend who watches serial killer docs - or reads newspapers that don’t share your opinion/ political views

I prefer to keep my internet reading as broad as possible so I don’t end up in a echo chamber of my own opinions. I like to understand why others believe things or have certain views and where they may have differing opinions to myself and I think the world would be a less divided place if others did the same.

🤣🤣 I'm not the one desperately changing the goalposts to DEFEND my hysterical and morally bankrupt stance. You do you. 🤣

You either have very poor comprehension skills, or are deliberately are misrepresenting what I am saying.
Either way I' not going to continue to engage with your incoherent ramblings, its boring me.
But don't let me stop you making a tit out of yourself.

Still tying yourself into a pretzel to justify moving the goalposts, to justify supporting abhorrent views.

How proud you must be.

@donquixotedelamancha

I said it's just entertainment

I don't really understand why watching racist rants is entertainment but if you are into that sort of thing then Hitler is a better speaker than either and there are loads of his old speeches available.

I also took a bit of offense to the fact that she thinks I'm mentally unstable for watching these guys.

People can be really judgy about racists. She's just been brainwashed by the lizard people.

I would be concerned about you, yes.

LilQueenie · 20/08/2021 00:06

I watch the same stuff but I don't believe it all. I am more concerned for the mental health of those who believe the government and trust them in everything.
