@SoreusBacchus

What makes it think it isn’t?

My family were asylum seekers to England, from an African state fleeing persecution.

And was that a major emergency to the people of the UK? You should know better if that is true.

It's a major emergency in Afghanistan, but they've had many major emergencies, some of them caused by or exacerbated by the UK. Suddenly pretending this week is a new major emergency, especially in terms of housing for hypothetical refugees, is incredibly naive.

Lolwhat · 19/08/2021 10:42

Because we don’t have any houses to give out, a family friend waited 3 years in a b&b with her kids after fleeing domestic abuse, 10 is a small amount and we should do better but we are massively underfunded so it will have to do

GrandDuchessRomanov · 19/08/2021 10:50

I shouldn't worry too much OP, there was a thread on here the other day with lots of Mnetters offering their spare rooms........................

I agree that if people from Afghanistan want to come to the UK they must be accommodated. But the current housing list in Bristol has over 2000 people on it. That is 2000 people who are living in unsuitable accommodation, families in b&bs,single people in hostels, it's not good enough. So where are these families going to live, they deserve better than a crappy b&b or a converted exhibition space. I expect this is the same in every city. We absolutely must find a proper solution to housing.

Really? Maybe turn on the news[/quote]
It’s a transition of power, and a peaceful one. If governments around the world are lining up to work with the Taliban as the new administration, what exactly is the emergency.

Considering the UK's foreign policy since, well, forever, we owe the world a favour. Unless it's only our emergency when we're suffering it, rather than caused it.

And once again, the housing, health and schools crisis is an active policy decision. It has been chosen by those in power.

Second homes.
Old family piles - could be divided into temporary accom for several families. Painful for some but sometimes it's the upper levels of society who have to give, surely. Buck House could easily hold quite a few. Perhaps the RF could lead by example?

AfternoonToffee · 19/08/2021 16:20

Having been involved very loosely with the resettlement of refugees, it isn't just about housing them, it is also about ensuring the support is in place to enable that they settle well in their communities. It is better for this to be spread across the country.

Ponoka7 · 19/08/2021 17:55

A five year old has fallen to his death out of one of the hotel's used to house refugees. Which brings home the need for the accommodation to be suitable. The windows shouldn't have been accessable.

@Jux, the Royal family don't own their residences. I'd vote against it. We are entitled to have our historical buildings preserved.

AlternativePerspective · 19/08/2021 18:06

This just isn’t black and white. There are knock-on effects from housing refugees or even allowing them into the country.

For every refugee who is housed a UK citizen has to move further down the queue.

For every refugee child which gains a school place someone in the UK may struggle to be placed.

For every refugee who needs NHS treatment the waiting list for UK citizens goes up.

This leads to further resentment of refugees coming over here. After all, it’s not the fault of the people waiting for houses that there is suddenly a situation where they’ve been moved 10 places down the queue because they’re suddenly less deserving.

If you bring in too many they will struggle to settle into and even be accepted by the communities they move into, on the basis that their presence is going to make things harder for some.

Raggedyanabell · 20/08/2021 08:32

@AlternativePerspective is right. There is a huge lack of affordable housing.
I'm from Bristol and desperately want to move back to the south west to be near my family. I live on the other side of the country with an emotionally abusive man, no friends or family and no support network here. But feel totally trapped and isolated here with my son. I have no chance of renting privately as the rent prices are extortionate. Ive been completely out priced from my home city.

And while I absolutely do not begrudge someone in need seeking refuge, you can't ignore the massive issue we have here already. It is not good enough for many of us.

Raggedyanabell · 20/08/2021 08:37

I don't think I could afford a room in a house share in Bristol TBH.
