Saw an advert this evening for ‘overseas staycation’ to Jersey/Guernsey

Piss was boiled.

@HelplessProcrastinator

YANBU. The original term meant staying at home and doing holiday activities as day trips. It’s mean increasingly hijacked by marketing for UK breaks since the pandemic as an alternative to travelling abroad. I am aware that language evolves but still annoying and wrong.
Totally agree

Who cares Hmm
Thank you for your valuable contribution, I shall consider your wise words Grin

@GlitterBiscuits

A staycation is a holiday in YOUR OWN HOME!!!

That's it. Have some days out, relax, whatever but you are based at home!

How can you holiday in your own home? Isn't that just called 'living there'?
FunTimes2020 · 17/08/2021 22:45

@isthisareverse

Sorry but you are wrong, can I convert you? grin

nope Grin
but I am happy to convert YOU!

A staycation is staying at home, but doing holiday type activities in your local area.

A holiday in the UK is a holiday.

This.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 17/08/2021 22:46

I agree with you OP. It’s very subtle snobbery. As in those people who would usually go abroad are slumming it this year de to the pandemic. If holidays in the Uk aren’t proper holidays then I can say I haven’t had a holiday in 8 years (except I have).

Tinpotspectator · 17/08/2021 22:49

A staycation is definitely holidaying from home, often with days out.

Benjispruce5 · 17/08/2021 22:49

I used to work with a woman who said she was going to Ourgate when she was staying home.Grin

Terhou · 17/08/2021 22:49

@MsTSwift

Nah. A staycation is when you don’t travel abroad. That’s how I and everyone I know understand it anyway.
But it just doesn't work. If, say ,you lived in Virginia and had a holiday in San Francisco, you are saying that would be a staycation - despite the distance involved being around 2,900 miles or a 5.5 hour flight. Really?
MrsJuliaGulia · 17/08/2021 22:50

When I think of a staycation, I think of a holiday in the UK. When any of my friends refer to staycations this year, they mean Cornwall, not Fulham.
That’s the hill, I’ll die on.

Benjispruce5 · 17/08/2021 22:50

We holiday in U.K. a lot and we definite don’t stay in our home. Staycation is days out from home or just having time off.

dunkaccino · 17/08/2021 22:51

Thank fuck for this!! I was thinking that I had been gaslighted into thinking that a staycation was going on holiday in your own country, but no, I find I am right!

It is indeed spending your time off from work staying in your own home and having day trips out and relaxing at home (which was infinitely more appealing pre-lockdown!).

I get irrational cross when I hear/read about people having a 'staycation' and buggering off somewhere. No you're not, you're GOING ON BLOODY HOLIDAY!

As you were ....

Benjispruce5 · 17/08/2021 22:51

Definitely

Terhou · 17/08/2021 22:51

No. You're not going to work, you're making an effort to go on outings and do holiday type things as a family, and you're also ideally eating out a lot and having takeaways to minimise the housework involved.

MsTSwift · 17/08/2021 22:52

Well I’m not American. Perhaps over there if you stayed in your own state it would be a staycation.

What?! Well let's just scrap the word holiday and call them all staycations. "Yes our honeymoon will be a long haul staycation in the Bahamas " "He's thinking of having a 6 month staycation backpacking around Asia" "We are taking a private jet to the Bangkok Hilton for a luxury staycation" Hmm

Second thread today on this.... why are you bothered?

HappilyHadesBound · 17/08/2021 22:54

I will also die on this hill!!!

I can count on one hand the number of family holidays I had as a child- and every one of them was in the uk. I refuse to be told I never had a holiday!!!

Denigrating the experiences of those who can only (or choose to only) holiday in the UK is not on!

itsnotmeitsu · 17/08/2021 22:54

I've found my people: pedants unite. Of course it doesn't matter, but to a pedant, language does. Of course, language evolves all the time, but that doesn't stop me pointing out to my husband (who'd probably like to exchange me for someone else [good luck there, babe] in an annoyed tone, that, "I'm not accessorising, I'm co-ordinating - there's a difference" Grin.

What about people who don't work?
cheapskatemum · 17/08/2021 22:54

Last week my friend and her family came from London to stay at my house in the countryside. I showed them some of the lovely beaches, walks, National Trust places etc nearby and we ate out in local pubs and cafés. They had a holiday in UK, I had a staycation.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 17/08/2021 22:56

Oh. I’ve been referring to our short breaks in the UK as staycations ie “staying” in the UK. That’s not dumbing down anyone else’s holiday - it’s certainly not supposed to be. But it’s not a normal summer holiday for us.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 17/08/2021 22:57

A staycation is staying at home and going out for day trips.
Can you imagine telling a Texan while they are holidaying in Hawaii that actually they are having a staycation, not a vacation!

AnnaSW1 · 17/08/2021 22:58

Language evolves. It's what it means now
