...in this day and age?

And if so, why?

(Usual disclaimers apply: long-standing member, not a journo, no Daily Fail affiliations. Question inspired by something that's come up in a book I'm reading; I'm curious to know what others think. Personally I think it's an obsequious practice that should have died out decades ago.)

"But I love all the history and ceremony, and think HM’s doing an amazing job."

Job of what, championing nonces?

@Trezo

EXCLUSIVE The Queen has “let it be known” she wants Prince Andrew to keep his role as *@GrenadierGds* colonel, despite senior defence chiefs agreeing “he should go”. Military sources say the situation is “unsatisfactory” and “very difficult” *@thesundaytimes*

The Queen has “let it be known” that she wants the Duke of York to remain as colonel of the Grenadier Guards, despite little prospect of him returning to public duties.

This is absurd, clearly his position is untenable. But with the royals nepotism trumps everything.

This is awful.

Wouldn’t be bowing or curtsying either

I’d also prefer a republic

I don’t agree with bowing to “blood” royals or married-ins, but the married-ins thing is especially weird. It’s like you’ve been made special by a particular bloke shagging your Envy < not envy

Brefugee · 03/11/2021 06:50

No. And i never have apart from one occasion as a small child giving flowers to a very senior royal.

KittyBurrito · 03/11/2021 06:56

No, I don't think any person is born automatically better than any other person. The whole idea of hereditary rank is offensive.

Brefugee · 03/11/2021 07:00

I think so. We could have a lying cheating avaricious venal politician as head of state. I know which I prefer.

well you could have a different person as head of state. There are at least 2 presidents that i know of who aren't knobs. If you (as a country) are daft enough to do the right thing and abolish the monarchy and then vote in someone like Johnson or Blair - that's all on you.

Not quite all on us. The votes don't reflect the sentiments in this crappy post-medieval kingdom. 22 million ballot cards basically go down the toilet at each GE.

Until enough people mobilise to change the electoral system, there is every chance of having a corrupt sociopath as President.

logsonlogsoff · 03/11/2021 08:09

Not in a million years would I bow out curtsy to another person, not even the Queen.
