AIBU Abingdon services

AIBU? The services this weekend just gone where so busy, if you where on the motorways you likely seen what I seen which was carnage.

At Abingdon services on our way back from Scotland visiting my family the baby changing facilities where out of order. My wife and I decided we would each go to the bathroom and swap holding our 9 week old in the car seat whilst the other got in line.

Whilst waiting on my wife and holding DS in his car seat I decided that my arm was killing so I was going to place him on a high chair just next to the toilets... problem is the high chair I found was about 2 ft inside the little area with the fruit machines. A supervisor appeared like a bat out of hell from god knows where with a raised voice telling me to get out as DS is under age ... granted she wasn't wrong at 9 weeks he is under age but come on.

I was trying to rest my arm, get out of peoples way and not have to put him on the ground with the risk of someone tripping over him or bumping into him whilst I held the seat. Anyway after I made the comment that this was ridiculous, the supervisor just kept repeating "It's the law, get out". I may have then called her a jobs worth and have been asked to leave for being abusive to a staff member (calling her a jobsworth was the abuse).

Am I being unreasonable for thinking this was a complete over reaction? I get that technically yes he is under age but come on there has to be a bit of common sense here or am I just being wishful?

Over to you!

www.everymancinema.com/baby-club

I wonder if 15 / 12's don't count otherwise everyman are risking it a bit here as all the movies are 12 or 15 on there screenings

Abington.

Abingdon is about 300 miles south, just outside Oxford and doesn't have a motorway, never mind services. If you're going to complain you better have your geography correct.

Some of the Scottish police have nothing better to do than pick up on these silly little things and you have no idea whether they were just in on Covid patrol making sure everyone's wearing a mask or hassling the manager about underage people in the arcades.

Abington your right. Is the mask requirements still in place in Scotland? It was a free for all that day. They would have been pretty busy

Oh and it's because of people like you OP that we had people turning up at our adults only licensed event at school (pre-Covid) with babies because they "didn't count" or with toddlers because "everyone knows over 18s really just means you can't bring teenagers" or primary school children because "they coudn't get childcare".

The polite thing would have been to say "I'm terribly sorry, I'll move right away".

Not be an arsehole about it.

TheGenealogist · 17/08/2021 18:16

And yes, masks compulsory in all indoor places in Scotland unless you are exempt.

I think that dealing with that level of stress for the person working there (ie busy and not very covid safe etc) probably made the person be a bit officious and OTT. But other people have made good points such as a baby in arms would have been simpler and given your little one a break from the car seat as they’re not meant to be in them for so long, and not so hard on your arms either.
I said yanbu by the way- but I can appreciate the worker was also stressed. But silly and OTT all the same.

comedycentral · 17/08/2021 18:21

Firstly, this is not trip advisor.
Secondly, you were wrong and abusive.

HTH

HopeEternalDad · 17/08/2021 18:23

Thanks. I agree with the others I should have felt with it better. It felt a bit OTT at the time but in retrospect if it's someone job at risk and the baby is genuinely a risk then yup fair to get us out of there. Live and learn right :)

Another point of view, in NZ we have had a problem with people with babies in seats or not, who are just brought in and whacked down while their so called caregiver zombies out in front of the pokies. So as a result, even a tiny wee babe in arms (or especially a tiny wee babe in arms), is not allowed in the gambling areas.

JammyDozen · 17/08/2021 18:28

This reminded me of something that happened to me last week. I’d booked tickets to a museum exhibition and as I was walking towards the entrance - clearly signposted - I was intercepted by two guys in high vis. One asked whether I had a ticket. Yes. Then he asked me what type, so I answered and he told me which queue to join. His colleague then barked in a really nasty tone “READ THE SIGN!”

Well, there was no need for that.

Boysnme · 17/08/2021 18:53

Abington was ridiculously busy last week when we had to stop for our child who downed all his drink in the first hour of travel and desperately needed a pee. You were BU to speak to the worker that way, she was just doing her job

Bloodypunkrockers · 17/08/2021 20:48

Anyone who uses the term "jobsworth" is never going to be reasonable
