To think I shouldn't hear NDN music louder than my own?

Terrace house, our houses are mirror image so my kitchen is attached to theirs and above our kitchens are our bathrooms.

When NDN plays loud music in their kitchen I can hear it even louder in my bathroom, literally as if they are in the room playing it with me. It is drastically louder and clearer than if I have my own music playing in my own kitchen, directly below the bathroom.

Does anyone know why this would be?

They renovated their whole house last year and everything has been louder since then, for example I can hear full conversations in their dining room now whereas before it was more muffled.

We don't have a great relationship as they are really inconsiderate so this is really starting to get me down now

Have they removed chimney breasts?

asosobsessed · 17/08/2021 08:15

@MiloAndEddie

Have they removed chimney breasts?
No chimney breasts.

In our bathroom the wall that is attached to theirs on our side is a cupboard with our water tank inside it. I remember when they were doing their renovation that the banging in their bathroom was so loud and heavy towards our side that I actually put my head in the cupboard to check their wasn't a hole!

But I don't hear any bathroom noises from them, so I just can't explain it.

I had this in our old semi detached house and it got so bad that we actually sold and moved solely because of it. We couldn't even go to the part that wasn't attached as it just went straight through. Music and especially bass seems to travel unless you're in one of those old solid terraces/ SD houses.

It's horrendous, I really feel for anyone dealing with this.

It really is awful, it has absolutely ruined my mental health. I'm constantly on edge waiting for it to start.

Our dining rooms are attached and in the bedroom above my dining room I can hear everything again as if they are in the room with me, louder than my own dining room below. If people are in my own dining room talking it is muffled, if they are in their dining room next door I can hear every single thing. It never used to be this bad so they have definitely done something on their side that has made it worse.

I bought an upright piano and hammered out lots of repetitive chords and hardly heard a peep from my inconsiderate neighbours next door.

HarrisMcCoo · 17/08/2021 09:00

They put their house up for sale last month. Thank goodness for that. Can't wait for the f*ckers to move.

HarrisMcCoo · 17/08/2021 09:03

Our bedroom was directly above their living room, if you see what I mean. They'd have parties, went on from 10pm til 4/5 am the music. Awful. I was a nervous wreck. It was especially bad in 2019.

HarrisMcCoo · 17/08/2021 09:04

You definitely have my sympathies OP💐

MiloAndEddie · 17/08/2021 09:18

I wonder if they’ve ripped up all the carpet?

HarrisMcCoo · 17/08/2021 09:28

We noticed that laminate flooring does mean you hear everything from next door.

WTFisNext · 17/08/2021 09:56

My guess is they've removed wallpaper in favour of paint and sold floors instead of carpets/rugs and possibly reduced furniture/clutter.

We were amazed at how loud our old home was when we'd moved everything out and were just cleaning. "Stuff" is an underestimated sound muffler.

Nirnroot · 17/08/2021 10:01

That's awful OP sorry its got to that stage for you, the "on edge" stage was my "I can't do this anymore" breaking point Sad

I agree with the other posters, potentially ripped up carpets could be the culprit.

Gothichouse40 · 17/08/2021 10:08

I bet they have ripped out their carpets and put in wooden floors. We never heard a thing from next door until they did this. We even hear all their arguments now, for which I have to turn my TV up. Carpets provide a certain amount of noise insulation. In our experience as soon as carpets are removed, the noise is not absorbed. I am in a mid-terraced, our walls are paper thin. We can hear coughs and sneezes. Keep your carpets if you don't want neighbours to know all your business.

asosobsessed · 17/08/2021 10:44

Thanks everyone, your responses are making me feel a bit better. I think one of the worst things about dealing with neighbour noise is that you feel really alone and like you're the only one dealing with it which makes it worse for me

I know they have tiled floor throughout their kitchen dining room which is open plan. We have carpet and lino, and ours is separated into two rooms. Though I'm 99% sure they have always had hard floors in there.

I do think they might have removed some cupboards in their kitchen. But I'm just baffled why the sound is travelling upwards to the first floor in our house so clearly and louder than our own?

We are a really quiet house and they aren't, but I now get worried about putting any music or radio in incase it makes them put theirs on which is always 10x louder than we would ever dream of playing music. But the alternative is we sit in silence and they get the luxury of living next door to a quiet house. It's a no win!

Sorry this is my last moan on the subject Grin but I have had a whole day so far of music, turn off, more music on, turn off, more music on, turn off, turn on, repeat...

They are incapable of stepping foot in their bloody kitchen without giving me a full volume soundtrack to make sure I know they're there Angry
