Giving my 3 year old a cup of tea every weekend..

My little girl is so great, eats everything, sleeps 7 to 7 uninterrupted.. Recently at the weekends she has shown an interest in my cup of tea, tea is the only thing I can manage first thing in the morning, I don't eat breakfast but at the weekend I sit down with her whilst she eats and I drink a cuppa.. I made her half a cup of weak tea last weekend and she absolutely loved it, I have mine with Oat milk so I don't add anything further to sweeten it.. Is it OK to give her 1 cup of reasonably weak tea at the weekends? Her teeth are also beautiful, straight and white with no plaque or cavities so I hope this isn't a slippery slope. It just was so lovely to see her really enjoying it. I'm pretty sure my first cup of tea was when I was very little too!
Is it ok or should I stop?

My son used to drink tea at that age, though decaff as I had a tea craving during pregnancy so I got decaff in and never swapped back to regular

I bought some redbush this morning.. I think DD will like it :) but I don't feel bad about giving her the occasional cup of milky weak tea. It makes her happy and it's causing her no harm.

Not only is it fine but according to this report I saw it should be encouraged!

Mine all love a cuppa and have done since they were about 2. Hasn't done any of them any harm!

Me and my siblings were all given milky tea as toddlers too.

I drank a lot of tea at this age, especially at my Gran’s house but I actually had 2 sugars in it every time! So bad looking back.

I didn’t give my own DC tea until they were about 7/8 I’d say and they rarely drink it. It’s the caffeine above all else.

I thought this was the norm? Op my teen has autism and only eats shit despite many tantrums of me trying to get him to eat a balanced diet. He eats no fruit or veg and will only drink pure orange juice or coke. He's 14 has perfect teeth, never had a filling and doesn't need braces. Just brush her teeth.

Christ, at that age my granny used to give me sups of her Guinness (not that I'm recommending this, mind). An occasional cup of weak milky tea is fine.

LowlandLucky · 17/08/2021 16:44

I had tea in my bottle as a baby, i have all of my teeth, my children were given the same, all in their 30s and not a filling between them. My grandchildren have tea every morning. It is tea not whisky

flipflopslap · 17/08/2021 16:46

It's fine but I have no idea why you'd introduce a 3 year old to caffeine 🤣🤣🤣 carnage!

Knittedfairies · 17/08/2021 16:51

It will be fine; tea is not renowned for being a gateway drug...

1forAll74 · 17/08/2021 17:03

I have been drinking tea for 70 odd years now, I have all drinks black with one sugar. Had tea with tea leaves in the oldie days. Both my children drank tea when youngies.

titchy · 17/08/2021 17:09

@romdowa

My first sentence was asking for a bottle of tea 🤣🤣 I was raised on it. So I doubt one weak cup at the weekend will do any harm.
Me too!
juglover2008 · 17/08/2021 17:17

It's the tannin in the tea that's not great for children as it can cause amnemia. But as long as your daughters not having it every day once a week should be fine.

FizzyTango · 17/08/2021 17:23

There’s not much caffeine in tea? And you have to brew it properly to get the caffeine. So if you are dunking the bag it’s honestly fine…

TheVolturi · 17/08/2021 17:23

My 4 year old has loved a cuppa since she was less than 2! I don't see the harm...

flowerbus · 17/08/2021 17:27

My 4 year old loves a cuppa, I let my 1 year old have a sip too, i dont see the harm in it

Isandriena · 17/08/2021 17:47

Very weak tea is perfectly fine as long as it's not all the time. My 3 year old daughter sometimes has a cup of tea. I use my already used tea bag and add tons of milk

OneJollyStork · 28/02/2025 06:23

My daughter has had a cuppa since since she could hold a cup , very weak. She is now 5 and has a builders tea with sugar like me every few days. No problems.

LowlandLucky · 02/03/2025 15:28

All of my children have drank tea( no sugar) since they could lift a cup, they are all i their 30s now and all are healthy. Considering some parents give their small children energy drinks i don't think giving them tea is the worst crime.

Redmat · 02/03/2025 15:41

Children always used to drink tea from an early age. Big urn of warm, milky , sugary tea was the start to the mornings on my Brownie pack holidays and they all drank it . Times have changed.
