Cub group leader - Voluntary isolation for U18s

I'm a (slightly reluctant) Cub leader, and we started meeting face to face again in May. We are a rural group with a massive field attached to our hut and we were able to mostly be outside last term, with a couple of meetings by Zoom towards the end of term to protect people's holidays!

I am worried about Covid transmission next term when we will be spending more time inside , now that U18s don't have to isolate if they have been in contact with a positive case. My Cubs come from 7 different village primary schools, over a large rural area, with siblings at 4 different high schools, so there is a big pool to transmit around !

WIBU to request that parents don't send their child to Cubs if they have been knowingly in touch with a positive case, ie; in their household?

I am double vaccinated, but as we have seen the vaccine is not 100% - and I have a DH (also double vaccinated) , 2 DC and my DM (70s) locally. (see her every day, walk the dogs, do her shopping). I very much appreciate that teachers, HCPs, emergency services and other frontline, public facing professions deal with this every day, but AIBU to I feel that don't want to take on this risk in a role I do voluntarily?

I am the only Cub leader, and have to rely on leaders from other sections to make up adult numbers.

YAAbsolutelyNBU, even if a bit naïve to think people would comply…

Frazzled2207 · 16/08/2021 21:47

Yanbu at all. If my kids cub leader asked this I would totally comply

BikeRunSki · 16/08/2021 21:47

I do agree that I wouldn't be able to police it @OutofTrousers, but I'd like to think that we have some honest parents!

I think this would be a massively sensible decision to make. I wish it was policy everywhere, to be honest-hopefully it will revert to that when schools go back if things kick off again.

I’d explain the catchment taking in several primary & secondary schools (siblings) and ask that if DC has been close contact w confirmed case they don’t attend, regardless of legalities as it’s a volunteer-led group.

You will still be able to be outside until at least half term, except if pouring with rain, won't you? I remember DS was doing night hikes, outside games, bonfires and so on in November and December before covid.

Popfan · 16/08/2021 21:59

My DS does scouts and if I or my husband had covid I wouldn't let him go until we were clear. I think it's a sensible decision and as you say, you are a volunteer and I think we'll within your rights to say this.

Oh yes, I'm planning to be outside as much as possible still, but this will be much reduced soon. We're in W Yorks. It''ll be dark by 8pm by the time term starts and we can't do night hikes every week!

Oh ok, I'm South West so not as bad. I'm sure parents will understand if you try to stay outside for at least the first few weeks. I would still agree with a stay home if there is confirmed covid in the household rule though certainly.
