Hot tub advice

My neighbors bought a hot tub with them when they moved in four years ago, it was an inflatable that only made any noise when in use. I try to be a live and let live type of person, so I never minded when they had friends round for parties or when they just used it for family fun - it all sounded quite jolly in fact.

BUT, now they have replaced it with a permanently installed variety that is plumbed in. I know nothing about hot tubs, so couldn't say what type it is, but what I do know is it sounds like a very loud humming refrigerator on a very regular basis, even when not being used, including at various times throughout the night. This is making it hard to go to sleep and has sometimes woken me in the early hours. From what I've managed to find out, this is something to do with keeping it clean and happens whether they have used it or not.

Does anyone have one of these and if so could you please explain to me why it has to be switched on all the time? I really don't want to fall out with them over it, and as I said, I don't want to be a killjoy, but I wonder if there is anything I could ask them to do that would mitigate some of the annoyance.

Thanks for any insight you may be able to share

if you turn it off it loses heat, meaning you have to wait for it to heat up before you can use it and costs more.

Surely you don't have to fall out - just tell them this new hot tub is making so much noise it keeps you awake/wakes you up. They might not know if it's sited further away from their bedroom etc. Any reasonable neighbour would get the problem sorted out.

The one I have is on 12 hr cycles
if they have a decent proper lid you shouldn’t hear much

On mine it will do a cycle ( bit like a washing machine😂 where it gurgles and bubbles but that’s it

But there is a low level humming but my neighbours have never mentioned it and I’m in good terms with them so I’m sure they would have said something and I’ve had hotub a for more than 10 years

But I did get DH to changed the clock / timer on it so it does the cycle at 7 am 7pm -

Agree with previous poster that they need to be left on all the time as it costs less that way. You could raise the issue and day the noise is bothering you especially at night but I'm guessing there won't be much they can do about it as they won't want to move it. I'd suggest getting some wax ear plugs and keeping your window shut. I have very noisy neighbours so I do feel for you.

Ours hums, louder than a fridge but not that loud. Personally we just forget about it after a while. I'm surprised it's enough to wake you at night Confused It's always on because otherwise the temperature drops but we don't have any neighbours so it doesn't matter.

Mine is on economy so it only heats up twice a day, if I know I'm going to use it at night then I'll turn it up a couple of hours before to get it up to temperature. Before then it kicked in every time it dropped a couple of degrees which was a waste of electric.

Edinvillian · 16/08/2021 16:49

It's not very noisy though, we can't hear it and it's close to our house.

Speak to them, it might be the surface it’s sitting on that’s causing the noise to reach you? I’ve heard of this when one is on decking. They might be reasonable enough to look into some rubber matting type stuff to put under it.
