My Mum who is her 50's has spoken to the doctor who thinks she has Muscular dystrophy. Can anyone offer any insight in to what this means. Thanks

The pain is in my Mum's left leg and her lower back and started around a month ago with the pain coming on suddenly.

Is this what your mother has reported?

Late onset adult muscular dystrophy is vanishingly rare.

Quite possibly sciatica?

Are you sure she has the diagnosis right? MD is normally (overwhelmingly) diagnosed in childhood, and in any case usually presents with some form of muscle weakness rather than pain.

You can, however, find out more about MD by reading the NHS pages about the condition.

The only symptoms my Mum has are the ones that I have mentioned at the start of the thread, when I was doing research I couldn't find much about MD being diagnosed in later life as it was mostly talking about it being diagnosed in childhood.

Have you heard it from doctor direct or could she have misunderstood.

nolongersurprised · 16/08/2021 12:27

Myotonic dystrophy maybe?

recededpronunciation · 16/08/2021 12:31

Has she got it muddled with something else? MS maybe?

idontknowwhyibother · 16/08/2021 12:31

Has she been reffered to a neurologist and the correct teams? I have it, and you need a lot of tests to prove it. Numbness in her leg could be anything.

idontknowwhyibother · 16/08/2021 12:32

*pain even sorry. Blush

enhancement · 16/08/2021 12:34

She has been referred for Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

Strange, they should be going for a diagonsis first. Pain in the legs and back could be a number of things fibromyalgia, MS, siatica etc.
Very odd, I would push for a diagnosis.

Apparently the doctor told my Mum to take ibuprofen and to have physio

It sounds more like musculoskeletal pain.
Could your mum have misheard and then "grasped" for a word which is similar that she has heard of?

AdventuresDownRabbitholes · 16/08/2021 12:52

I don't think a GP would be diagnosing muscular dystrophy - they'd be referring onto a specialist.

My guess is your mum has misheard or misunderstood.

anonforamo · 16/08/2021 13:00

The Dr has nowhere near enough information to diagnose that.

I think he said Muskuloskeletal which is not muscular dystrophy! Muscular dystrophy would be specialist consultant referrals pronto. Not a referral to a physio - that would come after proper diagnosis.

purplesequins · 16/08/2021 13:17

does he mean muscular atrophy due to inactivity?
physio would be very appropriate for that.

@purplesequins

does he mean muscular atrophy due to inactivity? physio would be very appropriate for that.
That sounds more likely, and your mum has misheard and/or misunderstood.

Old thread but happened upon it due to a google search. Can I just say the information in this thread is not correct at all - please don’t comment when you don’t know what you are talking about. Many forms of muscular dystrophy are diagnosed in adults. Yes pain can be a symptom I had pain due to tightness in legs and hypertrophy. My brother was diagnosed at 40, me 7, my uncle 54. Very shocking thread in regards to misinformation.
