Electric scooter

I was considering getting my 6 yr old an electric scooter at Christmas, but it seems many people have a bit of a downer towards them. I'm aware they aren't legal in public areas, but lots of people use them in my local park and surrounding area without being subjected to any fines. I was just wondering what your opinion is.

I'm presuming the OP is meaning one of the children's toy ones (there is one on argos for £120 for children 6+ limited to 5mph for example) rather than a full size adult one like the hire scheme ones.

My answer would still be No Way though.

NoNotYou · 16/08/2021 11:46

Most kids I see can't even ride a non electric one.

Palavah · 16/08/2021 11:46

You could get him a bong too.

NoNotYou · 16/08/2021 11:47

Or just say to the Po Po, "My Mumsnet said I could" and they will probably let you off. No?

This is why I am coming to hate living in England.
Everyone is only interested in themselves regardless of morals and/or the law.
Sick of all the minor law breaking of this kind.

thisismyhill · 16/08/2021 11:53

I've just got my 6 year old a scooter that has light up wheels/base board she loves it. Wouldn't put her near an electric scooter though.

Yeah, because it's unique to England 😂😂

Totally agree, people like the OP must think they are above the law, knows they're illegal, but what does that matter. Not only is it entitled, but what message does that send to a child? Teaching a 6 year old that they don't need to act and behave within the law..... good luck when children taught those morals turn into teenagers.....
DynamoKev · 16/08/2021 12:00

Of course it isn't, but I have visited and worked in countries where society seems more cohesive - The Netherlands and Finland are two.
It's true that there are plenty of other places with the same "fuck you" culture we've had since Thatcher.

Literally spat my tea out 🤣🤣🤣

Or become Prime Minister

Caffeinemonster · 16/08/2021 12:08

This cannot be real. Surely no one deliberately encourages their 6 year old to break the law? Or maybe the kind of parent that should be reported to social services?

itsalldope · 16/08/2021 12:11

For a multitude of reasons, YA definitely BU!

Several kids on our road have these illegal scooters and proubly ride up and down at break neck speeds. They can't have been cheap either - but their parents don't seem short of a bob or two. The Police couldn't be less interested.
Catcatcat1 · 16/08/2021 12:37

And when your kid drives into someone and hurts them? You know how fast they can go right?

Holyjinglebells · 16/08/2021 13:00

I probably should have made it clear that I was 'considering' getting him an age appropriate one. Thanks for the feedback though, it was merely a question, and not one that warranted some of the abuse given.

BlusteryLake · 16/08/2021 13:07

Surely the purpose of getting scooters for kids is that they get some exercise whilst riding them? They don't get that on an eScooter. Aside from them being illegal in the areas you propose to use it, which would be enough for most people not to buy one, I would at least hope the health side of it would strike a chord.

AlandAnna · 16/08/2021 13:16

😂 OP…. Just why? Have you run out of things to buy him or something?

Well as long as the illegally operated scooter is age appropriate…
zingally · 16/08/2021 15:07

Just because you see other people on them (breaking the law), doesn't mean it's appropriate for you to do it!

Those things are FAST, and sooooo no suitable for a 6 year old. Just get him a regular scooter like all the other kids.

skybluee · 16/08/2021 15:54

For a 6 year old boy I think it would be better to get a purely manual one as it's healthier and he will get exercise while having fun. There are tonnes to choose from. Make sure he wears a helmet.

DynamoKev · 16/08/2021 17:22

Looks like OP won't be back as they consider "abuse" is when not everyone agrees with them.

Cryalot2 · 16/08/2021 17:35

I was not aware you could get age appropriate ones. I thought all electric scooters were only legal with at least a provisional licence . Part of me wonders are they legal.
Surely an ordinary scooter with decorated to suit would be more appropriate. You cannot be too careful . I am sure you want to treat him but 6 is a bit young , unless as you say there are age appropriate ones.

Smogrocket · 02/04/2022 16:22

Hey, eScooters of any kind are illegal in any public space including parks, if it has two wheels an engine and a throttle and can propel itself autonomously, without a reg plate it’s illegal,

Parents like this one who thought it was somehow a good idea to send all her 3 kids shopping all by themselves on a single eScooter, need a stern telling off, before they get there kids badly hurt:

Totally incredulous Ashe.
