It was a sausage at a BBQ, I think it was under cooked. What’s the chances I’ll be ok?

high chance you will be ok.

Fl0w3ry · 15/08/2021 21:43

I think you are likely to be OK. I was served undercooked pink chicken when I was pregnant, it didn't become apparent it was undercooked until I'd had a few mouthfuls, thankfully I was fine. Hopefully you will be fine too.

DramaAlpaca · 15/08/2021 21:44

You'll almost certainly be just fine.

lannistunut · 15/08/2021 21:45

There is a fair chance you will be OK, it is depends how undercooked, what bacteria were present anyway and what your system is like.

Good luck!

User090 · 15/08/2021 21:46

Thanks - hopefully you’re right. The texture of it made me feel ill afterwards and now I have sore bowels (if that makes sense - I have IBS so it’s a familiar feeling) and I feel like I could have a bit of a dodgy stomach but I still feel ok and have an appetite so I’m hoping it’s just in my head.

Lots of people regularly eat undercooked meat and are OK. E.g. in France even burgers are usually raw in the middle.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 15/08/2021 21:48

Will probably be fine, some meat is fine to be cooked rare if whole pieces, so beef, lamb, but generally anything that's minced, like burgers, meatballs etc aren't OK.

Chicken and poultry never ok. Campylobacter gets its way inside the meat pieces then won't be killed if not cooked properly. Something like 25% of chicken carry it

Sausages are usually quite processed and have added salt and nitrates etc, so chances are it'll be fine.

Kittii · 15/08/2021 21:48

Some people swear by drinking a shot of high strength alcohol like brandy to help kill any bacteria. I've no idea if there is any scientific basis to it but I've done it a few times after cleaning up DC's vomit and not been sick.

sayanythingelse · 15/08/2021 21:49

I once ate raw chicken when I was a drunk student. Was fine.

A few years later, I ate veg pasta from the work canteen and was off for a fortnight with horrendous food poisoning as were a couple of other people.

I've been less worried about meat since then.

Velcropaws · 15/08/2021 21:49

Sausages have a lot of salt & preservatives in, so as long as they were fresh when served, you will most likely be OK.

Very different to being served an old/off/reheated multiple times sausage that a friend of mine ate in a ski resort and was ill for a week!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 15/08/2021 21:49

I'm not meaning all rare chicken will make you sick though, its just a higher chance of getting ill from it!!

User090 · 15/08/2021 21:53

Thanks, I’m hoping it was fresh. It was from a butchers (the butcher was at the BBQ and brought the meat) so I think it will be.

I prefer my meat to be what other people call undercooked or raw ( sausages pink in the middle, bacon is just cooked, steak super rare etc) and I'm never ill from eating it.

BumCat · 15/08/2021 21:58

I actually knew someone who sucked raw sausage meat out of the skin. Rank, but true. You’ll most likely be fine. I’ve accidentally eaten raw chicken on more than one occasion and have been fine.

sprinkleyumnut · 15/08/2021 21:59

You might have a touch of mild food poisoning, pork and chicken you have to be very careful with, but that would most likely be all that happens, if it happens, chances are you will be fine.

Suzi888 · 15/08/2021 21:59

Used to eat raw sausages🤢, you’ll be fine (probably)
Vegetarian now 😂

Itsmeagainandagain · 15/08/2021 22:00

Its not the raw meat its the temp it was cooked at, if it was cooked at a high temp to kill bacteria it should be fine... Hence why some people eat steaks with it practically having a pulse..
Chicken should always be cooked before a bbq if not dont eat it..
But youd be suprised where food poisioning comes from at bbqs is actually the lovely salad and not the undercooked sausage

TableFlowerss · 15/08/2021 22:01

😯😳

Steak tartare is one of my favourites. It’s made with raw meat. As are many other dishes. Saying all undercooked meat will poison you is a sweeping generalisation and inaccurate.

How do you feel? Do you feel a bit sick? The chances are you’ll be fine.
