Anyone been a victim of car insurance fake company?

Not an AIBU but posting here for traffic.

DS passed his driving test in June. He already owned his own car and had learner driver insurance so we needed to change that to full licence driver. I did a search and most of the policies were coming up as £1500+ (up to eye watering amounts) and black box. A company called Beagle Car Insurance came up on the search engine so I filled in the contact form on their website. They rang DS and gave him a price that was significantly lower than all others but the premium needed to be paid in full, no instalments. I did voice my concern but DS, being 18 and in a hurry decided to go with them and paid the premium in full. They emailed him a certificate of insurance.

Last night DS crashed. Police, fire service and air ambulance in attendance. DS and passengers all walked away with minor injuries thankfully. One of the police officers said that DS' car wasn't insured but we showed him the certificate and they accepted this and nothing more was said at the scene. This morning, when attempting to get in touch with the insurance company we've discovered that it was a fake company. It's on the FCA website from the beginning of July.

Has anyone else been a victim of this? If so, what were the implications for your licence, fines etc? Should we let the police know or wait for them to contact us? Any advice would be very welcome.

It looks like the actual company is real, but you bought off a cloned site Sad

@SturminsterNewton yes.

I've just found an article in last Friday's Mirror about this Sad

Oh no what a nightmare. No practical advice I’m afraid but I’m sorry it’s happened.

ChequerBoard · 15/08/2021 13:37

Oh no, that's awful.

I would contact the FCA consumer helpline and ask for advice.

I assume you will need their support to prove to the police that you have genuinely been the victim of a scam and that DS was not knowingly driving without insurance.

I second the pp to contact fca.

Valuable lesson that when something is too cheap, it's usually shit. There were people advertising car insurance on Facebook and it transparied they faked ncd to get cheap wuote which made insurance invalid. If everyone quotes 2k and 1 quotes 800, it's obvious. He will now remember for life.
Hope it all goes ok

It's so frustrating that it's a Sunday and there's nothing we can do until tomorrow.

Yes, hopefully a lesson learnt for DS. In more ways than one!

Ahh our local force posted a warning about this yesterday. I hope it's just a harsh lesson to learn rather than being in trouble criminally for your DS :(

thoughtiwasmoreswitchedon · 15/08/2021 13:58

That's what I'm hoping too @Mumofsend

They are called ghost brokers. Best to insure directly with a company through their website or over the phone
