Hiphop is the new mum music

Welcometotheterrorzone · 15/08/2021 10:52

I'm a child of the 90's, now suburban mother of two, roofbox and all.
I listen to all sorts of hiphop and grime, mostly in the kitchen and the car. Most of my mum friends share my musical tastes.
The question is 'is this mum music now?' My mum used to listen to Billy Joel, Wham, Lighthouse family etc and she is now the one who is likely to buy the sort of music aimed at the 'mum market' such as Adele etc. Most mums of under tens I know don't listen to that stuff.
So my question is that if most kids growing up now have mums who listen to 90's hip hop, will that become what they think of as 'mum music'? I know mums are individuals and listen to all sorts of music but thinking of our generation (millennials) and what influenced us, I think hip hop is the undeniable creative force of our era.

Yes!!! I was singing along to juicy yesterday in the car and my 8yo was most amused! Apparently it’s olden day music!

Thesearmsofmine · 15/08/2021 10:57

Yes it will become mum music.
I listen to a wide variety, everything from 60’s music right through to today’s chart music and everything inbetween.

Welcometotheterrorzone · 15/08/2021 11:05

@Thesearmsofmine me too. I think I love the Beatles in particular as my mum didn't listen to them, as they were her parents generation and so 'really uncool.' In the 90's the whole summer of love thing was brought back and now I can see oasis for what they really are (a tribute band.)

Is there really such a genre as 'Mum music's
I have always been into heavy, death metal, I love drum and bass, Grime, Rap,
But also classical music, folk music, we go to festivals and concerts many times a year (well, before covid) and our boys came with us from babies.
In my mi d there is no such thing as Mum music. I'm 57.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 15/08/2021 12:14

Yep! I was playing some old school drum and bass in the car yesterday with 3 13 year olds and they were nagging me to play their crappy music (rappers singing about lean and dying by suicide mostly) my music was Not Cool.

idontknowwhyibother · 15/08/2021 12:19

Ughhh, no grime music is not mum music.
It's boy racer music. 😂

Welcometotheterrorzone · 15/08/2021 13:05

@Rubyupbeat I suppose what I'm saying is that kids will always be embarrassed by what their mums listen to, even if that music was once the music of 'the yoof.' I suppose our understanding of the music changes. I always think about that line in Juicy where Biggie sings about the neighbours calling the cops on him for drug dealing, now I'm older I think 'yeah too right I would do the same.'

Omg you're totally right. I've been trying to explain to my DD about how artists like Missy Elliott and TLC are the inspiration for new music but she's not buying it. She was also v amused when I knew all the words to "Apple bottom jeans, boots with the fur" as she calls it as its all over TikTok 😅😅

sar302 · 15/08/2021 14:24

My husband looked at me in awe the other day when I rapped the whole of "21 seconds" by the So Solid Crew - I hope one day my toddler will be similarly impressed Grin

Polkadotties · 15/08/2021 14:28

If I was a mum my kids would be made to listen to TLC, destiny’s child, usher etc all 90s and 00s pop, dance, urban, r&b etc. They don’t make music like they did 00s r&b

LynnInAVan · 15/08/2021 14:43

Oh yes. Love annoying my kids with my Wu Tang renditions

LynnInAVan · 15/08/2021 14:43

Protect Ya Neck, kids

LadyCatStark · 15/08/2021 14:51

It’s the opposite in our house. The 90s are back in a big way for teens/ pre-teens and DS (12) is so jealous that I was there for the 90s/2000s punk rock era. Spotify makes it so much easier for them to listen to a wide range of music from different eras. Ironically, Billy Joel is also back so you can tell your mum she’s cool 😂.

LadyCatStark · 15/08/2021 14:55

Oh what I do find amusing though is when DS tries to tell me about 90s bands and TV shows like I wasn’t there and didn’t own the entire Friends series on VHS and have numerous trivia books 😂. He was aghast that I told him my favourite some is “In The End” by Linkin Park as it’s his favourite. Maybe but it’s been my favourite for 20 odd years 🤫.

Grinch48 · 15/08/2021 15:06

Ha I’m listen to Juicy right now in the car and before that SWV can’t believe these tunes are over 20 years old
I’m going to watch New Jack City later and listen to some real 90s music 😂

Polkadotties · 15/08/2021 15:15

There was a series on recently top songs of the 90s, each episode was a different year. It was just hit after hit after hit. I couldn’t say the same for songs of recent years

InpatientGardener · 15/08/2021 15:17

A teenager at work once referred to 50 cent as old person music Hmm

Macncheeseballs · 15/08/2021 15:18

Not all mums are the same age

Welcometotheterrorzone · 15/08/2021 15:20

@LadyCatStark Linkin Park will be classic rock by the time my two are teens, and now I feel ancient! I suppose it's the same as when I 'discovered' heavy metal at 15 and listened to lots of Slayer and Anthrax, who were 80's rather than late 90's.

Haha this reminds me of that Peter Kay bit where he talks about getting his kids to 'put on a bit of prodigy for your mum, get smack your bitch up on' Grin

Livvielo · 15/08/2021 16:38

Hahaha yes Grin the other day my niece was at the park at the same time I was there with my younger DC. My niece is 13 and was hanging out with a few mates- they started doing a tik tok, singing along and doing the latest dance ‘apple bottom jeans, boots with the fur’ to the ‘low low low low low low low low - and that’s where their video stops, by this time I’ve come up behind them and launched in with ‘baggy sweatpants and the reeboks with the straps, she turned around and gave that big booty a slap’ my niece was part amused / part horrified. She said I was ‘legit embarrassing.’ Grin

MulberrySquash · 15/08/2021 17:03

Yup it's mum music but I like to think I'm giving my kids a good education in the genre and all its pre 1996 glory

malificent7 · 15/08/2021 17:23

Love love love oi! So yes it is i guess!

malificent7 · 15/08/2021 17:24
