Would be interested to get your views on this and will explain my reason for asking once I have some perspective so it doesn't sway the vote.

But basically

Would you but a house where the door to the downstairs loo is in the open plan kitchen / dining room?

YABU - NO I wouldn't
YANBU - Yes I would

Thanks

We have one. Kids never put the seat down to flush and they use it for everything. We almost never have d&v in this house (like less than once per year) so I'm a bit sceptical about the poo particles flying everywhere claim.

Having said that I would definitely prefer it to be a bit further away for privacy reasons. But it's fine.

... yes. It's a door. It's a loo. The loo isn't in the sink...

We had a flat ( Victorian conversion) like that. It was fine. No smells wafting.

We are up in Scotland where any layouts I've seen are very different, BIL is in Kent and his house has the family bathroom and only toilet off the small kitchen which has an open archway to the nearby living room. To add to that the bathroom door is 1/2 frosted glass!!!

I don't shit for days if we go for a visit and stay over 😳 as never get any privacy, dh thinks it is hilarious because I now insist on paying for somewhere else to stay for at least one night just so I can go and I make him promise not to tell them why.

I wouldn't buy unless there were no other options or other significant pros to the house, but in their area most houses seem to have layout.

I used to have a house with this type of layout and it was the only bathroom in the house. Never found smells to be a problem but always kept the door shut.

Would I buy another house with the same layout - only if there was also an upstairs bathroom (I'm done with having to venture all the way downstairs to pee in the night). Also only if the bathroom did not impede the view to the garden, as in it being at the very back of the house - if it was at the side of the kitchen then yes

We only have one bathroom, it is off a tiny hallway which is off the kitchen (bathroom has a door, hall/kitchen is just an arch). The bathroom door is probably less than a metre from the cooker. It’s completely fine and no smells waft out.

Not as bad as the house we inspected a couple of years ago with the toilet in the kitchen. Renovated basement studio. Toilet next to stove. No barriers/curtains at all. Presumably so you could stir the pot from the pot. Grin We did not buy that one.
