In thinking that Radio 4 Presenter was sexist

Listening to Radio 4 this lunchtime, I heard the reporter Gito Hari talking about the House of Commons exchange between Harriet Harman and Teresa May as like a kind of 'catfight.'

Funny that because when I listed to it I thought it sounded like two top-ranking politicians (who happen to be women) engaged in frank and forthright discussion over a matter of some importance.

No I don't think you're being unreasonable.

Cameron vs Brown would never be described in such terms.

CissyCharlton · 29/11/2007 19:46

My thoughts exactly LB.

Complain to the BBC as I think that Gito Hari was being unreasonable to use the term 'catfight'.

CissyCharlton · 29/11/2007 19:58

I've never complained about anything on TV or radio before, but I'm tempted to because this really did and me.

YANBU. Bloody sexist and poor journalism.

hildegard · 29/11/2007 20:02

YANBU

Really lazy and offensive journalisim.

Desiderata · 29/11/2007 20:04

It doesn't bother me at all. Obviously this is way off my (poor) PC radar!

onebatmother · 29/11/2007 20:07

can you be arsed to complain thru website? it does get noted, from what I understand.
(have complained about v similar - in fact think identical - sexism in past)

hildegard · 29/11/2007 20:07

I don't see it as being pc or not though, it is about belittling women in politics, it happens all the time.

artichokes · 29/11/2007 20:08

As a total political nerd I just noticed that this is weirdly similar to something that happened in the US last year. There was a small outcry in Washington when a Senator called Jane Harman fell out with the Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the right wing media and most male senators dubbed it a "catfight". The left wing media was very critical of this sexist term.

Complain to the BBC Trust. The Beeb should not get away with demeaning professional women in the way the Mail and Express get away with everyday.

CissyCharlton · 29/11/2007 20:13

Fair enough Desiderata, but I still think it was totally unfair to use language more suited to describing soap opera plotlines than House of Commons debates just because he was talking about women.

Artichokes. Thanks for that information because I think that I will actually complain.
I mean, Harriet Harman is the Deputy leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the House. Teresa May is her Tory shadow. They both deserve more respect than this.

I see what you mean but honestly, people don't ever stop taking offence or complaining about things nowadays.
Freedom of speach, ability to express oneself is so severly curtailed now.
It's such a shame.
It's like people now go round waiting to be offended or affronted

edam · 29/11/2007 20:28

Oh for heaven's sake, I'd expect better from Gito Hari. Poor show.

artichokes · 29/11/2007 20:35

Go for it Cissy. This is the BBC complaints page www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/index.shtml

I can assure you Mrs. Slocomb that I am not easily offended. As I have already said, I've never complained about a television or radio programme. It's just that this really bugged me.

artichokes, I have just emailed the BBC and I feel much better now.

that I posted that link three times. Not sure what happened. I was not trying to bully you!

Glad you feel better.

This reminds me of a sexist/agist remark that was on the Today program a few months ago; this one wasn't a presenter but an official from the Environment Agency who was talking about how people can prepare for the risk of flooding. He said "People need to think through every aspect of what they will do if floods come, including what to do with Granny and the hamster."
