Help me to stop being so irritated by tics

It's unbearable. I fee so horrible. My DD15 has the most annoying tic at the moment and I don't know how to stop feeling so irritated! Does anyone else get this or am I a complete arsehole. I have just had to leave the room because it's so annoying.

She is autistic. She does not need any support and lives a normal life but something she has always had is the tics.

At the moment the tic is a noise she makes with her lips like the noise you make when you pretend to be a phone ringing, she does it after every few words.

How can I not be so rubbish??

One of my teens is a tic-er too.

After reading the GOSH research paper, which may or may not be the exact one I've linked too as I just googled it for the thread,

I learnt that the research shows it was best to not acknowledge the tics and that one of the worst things you could do was watch videos of other people ticing. So dd can now only go on the internet in the communal areas at home. Just in case she forgets and falls down a tic-tick-toc wormhole.

It's made a HUGE difference. My dd was tic-I got every sentence now it's once a fortnight.

My DS has always had tics (usually verbal). I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who finds it shamefully maddening. He does a sort of “hhhhh” before some words, in the middle of sentences, and for some horrible reason it makes me furious inside.
I wonder if it’s perhaps because it’s usually a sign of him being tired, and I’m so bloody cross he won’t just go to bed on time each night (causing arguments every night & sulky mood from him by day).
His stammer really isn’t his fault but something about it makes me wild. I really hate myself for it.

My DD has several tics but I find one of them unbearable. Sometimes I even tell her to stop doing it even though I know she can't.

I was feeling so mean DH and DD2 don't ever seem to be irritated by it. She does it all day every day.

My niece coughs and whistles (and less annoying ones). We all struggle with the whistle and sometimes have to take a deep breath or go get 5 minutes space. No point acknowledging it and she can’t help it but you can’t always let it wash over you Sad

My kids (not autistic) keep snapping/clicking their fingers together/off the windows/table it drives me effing batty- I also can’t be in a room if they are eating apples. DH does a weird nasal snorting noise at night again drives me bonkers. I know it’s not them it’s me. I discreetly leave the room when it gets too much.

Oh I could have written your post. I have to keep reminding myself that DS is not doing it deliberately. I have to make a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
