AIBU or is this just vindictive? Parking thread

I live in a row of terraced houses on a main road. There's a single yellow line outside and parking isn't allowed at set hours. Some houses have a garage with a space at the back but lots don't have any parking. My house has parking for a very small car but my car is too big to park there. My parking is in my back garden so even if the car could fit there it's not ideal as it'd fill the whole garden meaning we couldn't use the space. It's also a very difficult angle to get the car in and just not worth the effort as I use the car most days. There is plenty of parking at the end of the row of houses and most people use this place to park including me. I've only lived here just under a year but haven't had problems until now. A few days ago I parked near the wall of the end terraced house and returned to a note asking me not to park there as it's a salon and their staff and customers couldn't park. This seemed unreasonable to me as they could easily park in any other space that wasn't directly against the wall but to avoid trouble I decided I'll try not to park there if there's other spaces. Today when I came home the parking was quite busy but still a few spaces. I parked right at the back. After a few hours I realised I left something in the car so went back over to get it and another car has parked blocking my driver door. They have parked on the grass to do this and it's quite clear they're blocking me on purpose despite there being other spaces available. I think they see this as "their space" despite them having no more right to it than anyone else. If they haven't moved when I need to go out tomorrow I'm going to have to climb across from the passenger side. I have a health condition that affects my legs and ankles and have been suffering pretty badly over the last few days so I don't even know if I'll be able to manage. I don't know which house the car belongs to either. AIBU to park where I did or if not where am I supposed to park instead? Not that I can even get in my car now to move it. The spaces aren't actually marked, it's just a piece of land. Land is owned by someone who lives miles away and doesn't use the land but also doesn't mind people parking on it. Hope I've explained it well enough but ask questions if not.

Yellow is where I parked a few days ago
Blue is where I parked today
Red is the car that blocked my door
Green is all the other available spaces (some taken by other cars, some empty)

How close are they to your car? Could it be possible they thought you had enough room?

Burnt0utMum · 13/08/2021 20:00

No there was literally an inch between the cars

So they’re running a hair salon from their home but want you (and others) not to park there because they want to keep the spaces for themselves? Confused

Providing they definitely don’t own or rent the land you can park wherever you like. Don’t be beaten into submission by them.

RedHelenB · 13/08/2021 20:04

In your situation I'd use my own parking space.

Burnt0utMum · 13/08/2021 20:07

The salon is an actual business. They don't live there.

Obviously it’s not unreasonable to park where you did either time - but now you know that both ends of the row are unreasonable and a bit entitled. So your choice whether to avoid or keep risking confrontation.

As to where you can park, in any of the other available green spaces, I guess.

Yesitsbess · 13/08/2021 20:10

Most importantly, excellent diagram.

Secondly, WTF? It's a public highway yes? They don't have allocated spaces?

LaurieFairyCake · 13/08/2021 20:11

Call the police

If you're legally parked and they've deliberately blocked you in then they need the law explaining to them

I wouldn't do that though - I'd get a taxi to my appointment tomorrow and leave it there - they will move it tomorrow as the salon won't be open Sunday

And I'd do that every time - but I'd park the other way round so they couldn't block my drivers door Grin

MaMelon · 13/08/2021 20:12

@Burnt0utMum

The salon is an actual business. They don't live there.
Why can’t their customers park in one of the other spaces? The land isn’t theirs to dictate who parks where - but if it makes it easier then maybe just use one of the other spaces.?
Burnt0utMum · 13/08/2021 20:17

Where I parked today is "one of the other spaces" away from the wall but it appears there's another neighbour who thinks they can have their own spot despite having no actual right to it.

OP posts:
ShingleBeach · 13/08/2021 20:18

I would go in and speak to them.

Tell them there must be some misunderstanding as as far as you are aware everyone has equal rights to park on a public road.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 13/08/2021 20:19

Call the police and get them to contact the car owner.
I think a phone call from the police might get them to stop their ridiculousness.

thefirstmrsrochester · 13/08/2021 20:19

You can park wherever you like on a road so long as you aren’t in permit/disabled bays, on yellow lines etc. The salon doesn’t have priority over anyone else.

NoSquirrels · 13/08/2021 20:20

Yeah, I got that.

So now you’ve identified 2 entitled neighbours/2 spaces you ‘can’t’ park (can’t without hassle).

So it’s up to you if you park in those 2 spots again or avoid and park in the other green spaces.

Burnt0utMum · 13/08/2021 20:43

I guess that's what's bothering me. I don't want any hassle but I do think it's wrong that they're blocking my door to basically scare me away from parking there. Why should they get away with that? I do tend to park in one of the middle spaces more often but if they're ever full I shouldn't have to feel like I can't park there.

OP posts:
StoneofDestiny · 13/08/2021 21:01

The salon owner doesn't get to own the road - don't be intimidated. You live there and have every right to park there.

phishy · 13/08/2021 21:51

Complain about them to the council, they are being bullying cunts.

newnortherner111 · 13/08/2021 21:54

Get a smaller one and use your space at your house. Problem solved if not immediately, even though the behaviour is unreasonable.

2021V2 · 13/08/2021 22:00

Picture take a photo of the car blocking you in and post it in local fab groups and say you are parked on a public highway and disabled and someone has blocked you in deliberately and name and shame the business too - say you are asking for it to be moved quickly else you will phone the police - make you Facebook post entirely neutral no emotion.
Ie please see photo attached and number plate - does anyone know whose car this is as it looks like they have blocked me in deliberately. I’m parked legally on a public highway and they have parked less than an inch away from my car - can anyone tell me the name and address of the owner - when this happens round here fb posts like that get very supportive posts and the cheeky fW promptly moves very very quickly and apologises

EvenRosesHaveThorns · 13/08/2021 22:34

So.....you're annoyed that two neighbours have an entitled feeling to a spot... Because it affects your own entitled feeling to a spot Grin

MaMelon · 13/08/2021 22:36

No - because they’re parking an inch away from her driver door to stop her getting into her car in an attempt to stop the OP parking in ‘their’ spot. The OP hasn’t done anything to them.

Did you RTT?

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 13/08/2021 22:57

I would phone the police, they have blocked you getting into your car and you are parked legally. Take photos though so you can see where you are in relation to the road and that they are on the grass.

Kithic · 13/08/2021 23:01

You have parking but choose not to use it??

MurielSpriggs · 13/08/2021 23:11

The spaces aren't actually marked, it's just a piece of land. Land is owned by someone who lives miles away and doesn't use the land but also doesn't mind people parking on it.

This all sounds a bit vague. What permission have you got to park there? How do you know that whoever owns the land hasn't given the salon permission to use the bits that you've been parking on?

The worst-case scenario is that you (and possibly they) are trespassing. And even in the best-case scenario, that you do have the landowner's permission to park, you can forget the police turning out to adjudicate. They're not going to interested in a squabble about who parks where on private land.

TheUndoingProject · 13/08/2021 23:16

Obviously blocking you in is totally unacceptable, but to be honest I can see why it’s annoying them that you’re not using your own perfectly good space.
