To expect my post to be delivered to the right house!

There’s a house one mile away whose name is one letter different from mine, and their postcode is one letter different from mine. For example Dunroamin AA1 1AA vs Bunroamin AA1 2AA.

Royal Mail is delivering my post to this other house. The postman has told me to change my house name because it’s causing confusion.

Firstly I don’t want to change my house name. Secondly I paid £100 admin fee to register my house name and I’m not paying another £100 to change it just because they can’t deliver the post correctly!

I told the postman they should be going by the postcode, and both houses have different postcodes so they should be able to deliver the mail correctly. He said the sorting office and the postmen assume the house name and postcode are both misspelled. So they receive a letter that’s clearly labelled Dunroamin AA1 1AA, but they assume that the name and postcode are both wrong so they deliver it to Bunroamin AA1 2AA.

AIBU to think I shouldn’t have to change my house name, and Royal Mail needs to get with the program and deliver the post by postcode?!

but also do you not have a house number?
No. It’s an old stable block that was converted into five houses. The buyers picked their house names. So we are (for example) Dunroamin, The Old Stables, Anytown, AA1 1AA. The other house is just Bunroamin, Anytown, AA1 2AA.

Sometimes senders format the address weirdly and omit “The Old Stables”. Or they put the words in the wrong order. Which Royal Mail should be able to cope with imo, as they should be going by the postcode.

Has the house always been called this, or did you just decide to give it a name yourself?
It used to be a stable block with no name. It was converted into five new houses. The buyers picked the names for their own houses. It cost £100 to register the chosen house name.

We live in a ground floor flat on a main road which is mainly houses. We’re 50 block of flats, main road and there’s a house opposite us which is 50 main road. We’re constantly getting their post and them ours. They also don’t seem to ever be at home so I’ve found numerous parcels of mine just dumped outside their front door.

In other words if you choose the name of your house you need to check it's similarly to those in the same postcode area
That’s what the £100 admin fee is for. You submit your proposed house name and they check it against their records. If they decide it’s a no-no because there’s another similar house nearby, or because it’s not an appropriate name etc, then they get back to you and tell you to choose a different name. If they agree that your chosen name is ok they add it to their database and the electoral roll.

They are the ones who approved this house name so I expect them to be able to deliver to it! I’m not happy for them to take my money and then say “actually this name is a problem after all, you need to pay again to fix our mistake”.
