Why is it so expensive to support a football club?

Surely something so innate to our national culture and heritage should be more accessible?

Surely those top players don't need that amount of money? I bet most of them could halve their salaries and not even notice.

AIBU to think footballers salaries should be capped, club spending should be capped, a certain percentage of all clubs' games should be free to air, and ticket prices need to come right down.

I was in Manchester yesterday morning and saw hundreds of drunken fans at 9.30 in the morning being escorted by a large number of police. I think the biggest problem with football IS the fans, maybe if they were breathalysed before being allowed into the grounds, arrested for drinking in the streets and pubs being made more responsible for their clientele then maybe more families would want to go to matches.
I’m a season ticket holder at Old Trafford and I must say that we certainly don’t see that behaviour inside the ground, and up until this season we’ve travelled by train and there’s always been a mix of supporters on the train, at Piccadilly, in the city centre and on the trams and we’ve never seen any trouble.

You do see a lot of family groups at games, it’s in the interests of the clubs to encourage this, the children attending now are the supporters of the future. My son has been coming with me since he was 4, he’s 21 now and we still sit together. I wouldn’t have taken him as a child if I didn’t feel it was a safe place for him to be.

My season tickets costs just a few pounds over £700, which equates to £37 per game, and I think it’s 10 years now since we last had a rise in season ticket prices. For me it’s worth every single penny. After the last 18 months I can’t begin to tell you what a boost it was for my mental health to be back in the full stadium on Saturday.

Salary caps have destroyed rugby league, salary caps are not beneficial in sports.

It doesn’t make sponsorship cheaper, it doesn’t make kit cheaper, it doesn’t make season tickets cheaper, it just leads to shit player welfare.

It's only expensive to support certain football teams and only if you go and watch them play

I don't go anymore. I watch on TV for free

Yep. Been to OT many many times, in the Stretford End, never seen it kick off (or around the ground after). And in the family stand there are TONS of people there with kids!

And yes, Prem team season tickets are expensive. But football has a lot of teams in a lot of leagues. There's almost always a smaller local team if you're into watching football generally and it can be so rewarding to go to smaller games - I'm a born and raised red but when I was living in Harrogate for a few years I went to loads of their games. Max of about £15 a game, £5 or free for under 18s depending on age, really friendly family feel. So there's plenty of opportunities to get your children into football if you want as a family!
