REALLY not enjoying my job at the moment and would love to pack it all in but that isn't realistic with a mortgage to pay etc etc. The work is interesting but the politics and the pressure we're under is torture. I've worked for a number of organisations where this has been the case so don't really want to move somewhere else to deal with the same crap! Looking for an alternative route but clueless at this stage around what that could be. If you've been in that situation a) how long did it take you to bite the bullet and b) what did you go onto do? Thanks from a frazzled mum who needs a break! 🤯

Can I ask what you do?

Might help with advice / direction

TwinklyLightsForXmas · 12/08/2021 20:46

I manage a large operational team in a financial services company. Don't want to say much more than that in case I out myself.

There's politics everywhere OP 😂😂😂
It can be worse in the public sector.
I transferred from private to public, won't give details as it's way too outing!
There's way more red tape in public sector in my experience and much more beaurocrasy in the public sector.

That's why I want to do something different. I could move to another company but pretty confident it would be virtually identical. Looking for inspiration for a new and different path.

I'd suggest starting your own business if you want to escape politics and crave freedom. It's the only way you'll find it I think.

I left to offer careers advice for people wanting to get into the corporate world Grin. It was oddly enjoyable and cathartic.

There are politics in all walks of life and careers, public and private!

KittenKong · 12/08/2021 20:50

Worked for small companies and a charity.

It’s the same everywhere!

Hoppinggreen · 12/08/2021 20:52

Consultancy, self employed

GreenBiro · 12/08/2021 20:55

Also consultancy, self employed. Mainly enjoyable, but different shit, different day!

You are really not going to so that. 🙄
LadyPoison · 12/08/2021 21:25

I left financial services to become a silversmith! Until then I'd barely picked up a tool let alone played with metal.

Completely different and I don't regret it for a second. Jewellery making rarely gives me the stress fuelled sleepless nights that I used to have.

KittenKong · 12/08/2021 21:26

No! That’s what I want to do! I have done some courses and love working with metal. Tell me more...

This is what I did. Went to college at night whilst in my corporate job. Started my business and quit within 6 months.

Never been happier nor wealthier! I’d never go back.

What would you like to know? I started with some courses from a local jewellery designer, set up a basic workbench in my kitchen then made a dedicated working studio in a spare room.

Once I ran out of fingers to wear all the rings I set up a basic website.

There is a great demand for hand made artisan silver jewellery. Yes you can buy mass produced very cheaply but the difference is obvious. I've sold rings from my finger before now (I was trying something out and wasn't sure it would be comfortable so I was wearing it one morning in a coffee shop as a test run)

What kind of business @cazzovuoi?

@TwinklyLightsForXmas

What kind of business *@cazzovuoi*?
I want to avoid outing myself because if you know my niche then you know me, I am one of the most well known that do this.

I will tell you that I built a very lean business, very few overheads thanks to the internet so it’s almost all profit. I work 15 hours a week max and have 2 virtual assistants!

If I can do it, anyone can!

KittenKong · 12/08/2021 21:55

LadyPoison - tell me all!

The courses I have done are definitely things I can’t do at home (welding, hand raising and acid baths - all the fun stuff!). I’d love to be able to make things at home - my experience is in making ‘things’ (boxes, bowls, ornaments) but I was advised by a goldsmith to try my hand at jewellery making (there are so many course though I wasn’t sure where to start, it he sadly died before I got to have a good blether).
