Fell and tore ligament in knee

GP says they can’t send me for mri for a limb only torso now. 3-6 months wait. I can’t walk and am in a wheelchair. Surely this is crazy or AIBU
@DirtyDancing after you had the mri did the nhs help
The Doctor referred me. This is what makes it so unbelievable for me. The Doctor can not refer me on the NHS, but if I can pay for it myself he will refer me to a private clinic and review the results. For many people who can't afford the scan- you don't get one

DirtyDancing · 13/08/2021 08:21

My advise is get the scan through your GP otherwise they won't review the results. It also was slightly cheaper than going private too. About £20...

It is horrible! I did find the donjoy brace much more comfortable . That's the hinged brace mentioned above. Basically it's fixed at whatever angle your leg is stuck it so it instantly makes it more comfortable by stabilising the joint, and then over the weeks your therapist may gradually increase the degrees of movement it permits until eventually you can fully straighten your leg. I don't think you should even be attempting to straighten your leg at the moment though without supervision and while it's such a new injury. Fingers crossed you get the trained support you need though - the pain from the uncontrolled movement in the joint is something else.Flowers

@DirtyDancing the GP as well as A&E said they have to be ordered through “the msk service” for limbs. (They can request for torso. The MsK wait time is 3 to 6 months for a knee MRI.

I am paying £300 to have a private MRI Saturday night and my GP said that to bring him the report directly on Monday and he will get me in to see the orthopaedics surgeons within 2 weeks.

I am in shock about 3-6 months for an MRI for someone at 50 after a fall was taken by ambulance and it’s somehow ok to leave them unable to move from 3-6 months. No pain medication, no crutches, had to buy my own knee brace to get on and off the loo.

WTF why am I paying tax

@Bakewellisntjustacake

I’m glad you had success with your self regime of rehab. You’re a trooper. I think you said this was intensive and during covid. Unfortunately for me to keep a roof over my head I must go to work in the city on the tube every day, walk about 3/4 mile each way and ambulate to meetings and so forth during the day.

I need to have this sorted much quicker.

Poor you.I did this last year at the beginning of first lockdown. Had already had a 20 year old ACL tear and this was the medial that went.
No face to face physio or anything of course, and people hadn’t got up to speed with video! I did have good phone contact with a great physio though.
I was very fortunate and it healed in 8 weeks. Easily could not have though and I would have found a private route somehow.
Good luck. Plenty of pain killers

Red cross hire out mobility aids, wheelchairs , crutches etc.

Access to Work (www.gov.uk/access-to-work/eligibility ) may assist your company to make reasonable adjustments to enable you to commute and for h and s you need a evacuation assessment/PEEP for the office/s. Is wfh even part of the time an option?

rhowton · 13/08/2021 15:20

If you can afford it, go privately as quickly as you can. Private MRI followed by private ortho specialist. You will have surgery quickly on the NHS, most likely by the specialist you see privately. It will be £300ish + £250ish. Fingers crossed. I did mine on 13th Feb, had operation on 1st April. They wanted swelling to go down before they operated.

DirtyDancing · 14/08/2021 08:00

Honestly, I can only sympathise! I was run over and whilst was seen quickly by A&E, had two X-rays. They told me I had broken foot and damaged pelvis and then left to walk out of A&E and wait for a call by the fracture clinic. That took 2 days, plus another 2 to get an appointment. I was never offered any crutches, supplied my own. No physio or chiropractor follow up. I have paid for it all myself, plus this scan. I am around £700 out of pocket so far.

This is utterly unethical OP.

Really hope the private mri gives you some positive next steps.

My sympathies... Knee problems as you know are utterly awfully painful.

I had ruptured acl 20 plus years ago when I was a young adult... At the time had a delayed repair, that went badly wrong... All this time later I've needed knee replacements...

If you don't get some serious help... If you cna travel I'd recommend totally this guy... Will do everything in a day /couple of days...

@IamtheDevilsAvocado thank you. I feel it’s totally unacceptable too. I had the private mri and I have a GP appointment Thursday to review the report. I’m hoping it’s nothing but as I still can’t get around it’s probably wishful thinking. If I need surgery which seems likely I wonder how long the wait for that will be? I don’t take it as a good sign the GP gave me a month long sick note before the mri.

That’s led me to start sending CV’s like crazy to fully remote roles so the NHS waiting times don’t cause me to lose my employment.

It’s all very depressing.
