To take a sick day today?

I've got a painful condition that is worse at some times and more manageable at others. It's included as a disability under the Equality Act. Yesterday I was in pain all day and after work took my painkillers. I try not to take them unless I really have to as they make me a bit spaced out which I don't like. They also don't do enough for the pain but nothing does and this has been going on for many years so I've tried all sorts of alternatives. Last night I barely slept due to the pain waking me up through the night so today I'm exhausted and still in pain. Only thing that's stopping me taking a sick day is my DD also has same condition (hereditary) and has a hospital appointment today which I'm taking her too (work were fine with me fitting my hours around this today). I really don't want to rearrange that as it'll take a long time to get another appointment and it's getting urgent that she's seen. So AIBU to take the day off to rest but still take her to the appointment?

Yes you should. Rest up Thanks

Doesn't sound unreasonable to me in the slightest. Hope all goes well at the appt.

Yanbu at all.
Could someone else take your DD to the appt? Or would you rather be there?

pinkmoon18 · 12/08/2021 07:18

YANBU Thanks

There's no one else who could take her but I also think it needs to be me who goes with her as it's a rare condition and I'm the only one with a good understanding of what outcome she needs from the appointment. I'm going to report my absence now then at least I can try to get a bit of rest before we go.

You should do it. This is from someone who has a long term hidden health condition covered by the equalities act who also hates taking sick days. However, sometimes these things just can’t be avoided.

If I was in this situation I am 100% sure my manager would insist I took the day off!

Then again, I do work for a charity specifically for (and run by) people who are considered disabled under the Equality Act 2010 so they are way more knowledgeable and empathetic about this stuff than many places of work.

You would be doing nothing wrong, OP.

Yeah I think it's that I don't want to let my condition get in the way of my work but I guess I have to accept that it does sometimes. I've just let them know I won't be in today and it feels like a big relief that I can just try to focus on feeling better for a bit. Thank you all.

That's sounds fair enough, op. I only suggested someone else take her in case you needed to rest but yanbu to take the day off, rest and take your DD to her spot regardless
