To think my new job is already damaging me

I started a new job 3 weeks ago, I am an assembler for a well known supermarket in their distribution center. My job involves taking a product on a pallet from one area of the warehouse and placing them in cages around the warehouse using a pedestrian powered pallet truck. I'm only 3 weeks in an my hands are knackered, i have constant tingling in all my fingers, I wake during the night to find them feeling dead which is really painful, I can't hold items for longer than a minute anymore otherwise the tingling gets worse and more painful then the throbbing starts, I'm losing my grip all the time now its just slowly getting worse. I have worked in warehouses before and this has never happened so why now, would it be worth a trip to the GP, is there anything I can use to help prevent it getting any worse?

How heavy are the products and what was your level of fitness before you started work? Maybe your body is adjusting?

Yes, GP.

Also speak to line manager incase there's some additional training or protective gear that might lessen the affects of the job. Are other people doing this job suffering in the same way?

And start looking for a new job.

Sounds like carpel tunnel syndrome. I get that and wrist splints are a massive help . I sleep in them and they keep my hands in the right position which eases it during the day. Have a Google and see what you think .

Products can weigh anything from 350g to 20kg, my level of fitness was probably average, I'm a mum of 4 so I'm constantly on my feet being active anyway with the children. As far as I know there is no other protective gear my employer provides, I haven't actually asked anybody if they feel the same way, they all complain about achy feet and backs, not heard anything about hands being mentioned. Aside from the hand pain I actually enjoy my job and jobs are hard to come by in my area. I think wrist splints are the way to go until I can get in to see my GP.

It sounds like carpal tunnel or something similar. Certainly worth a trip to the doctor. Years ago I had a job shelf stacking in a supermarket at night. I would get home in the early hours and go straight to bed but found that my legs ached and hurt so much I couldnt go to sleep. This went on for about 3 months when it suddenly stopped so perhaps the body gets used to new movements eventually!
