To worry about my period?

Kingfisher8 · 11/08/2021 18:23

I’ve been diagnosed with PCOS about 6 years ago after coming off the pill. My periods remained regular and spot on.

I’ve had my first Pfizer vaccine in June. Since then I had 2 periods… both pretty much on time but super light and only lasted 3-4 days. I should be half way though my second period (since the vaccine) but I’m on my 3rd day and it’s pretty much stopped. Im due to get my 2nd Pfizer vaccine on the weekend and hoping that after that it will get back to regular 5 day periods but I can’t help it I am so worried! I haven’t got any kids yet and I’m just so so worried that I won’t be able to have children…

I have heard anecdotally that it has affected periods mine were definitely heavier for a couple of months after mine just keep an eye on it though

Sapphire387 · 11/08/2021 20:25

My period has disappeared since my second pfizer jab - it's been almost two months. Anecdotally, I am hearing that temporary disruptions are reasonably common but it tends to settle. Have you considered doing a yellow card report?

SilverRoe · 11/08/2021 20:28

Still waiting for my period too after second Pfizer jab, been about five weeks now. Confused

Lineeyesoverhere · 11/08/2021 20:31

Shorter cycle, much lighter and only lasts 3/4 days since mine…

Kingfisher8 · 11/08/2021 20:36

It helps a bit knowing that it’s not just me… I really hope it will settle back to normal. It probably doesn’t help that I worry too. I think I am going to just keep an eye on it and contact my GP if it still worries me after a couple of months. I am just terrified of infertility 😞 and worried if the vaccine has made it worse…

I had the AZ but it's completely buggered up my cycle. Light but for two weeks at a time and lots of clots. I've had both doses now so waiting for it to settle down.

The Pfizer has caused some menstural issues, but I believe they are temporary.

But re your fertility: I have PCOS so understand your fertility concerns.

However, I generally had very few or no periods. Sometimes I would go a year without one, then two or sometimes it would be every five months etc. That was a sign I was not ovulating or very rarely ovulating.
However, your periods are regular, which will give you something to work with, for fertility investigations (eg testing for ovulation via blood tests) and it may mean you are in fact ovulating yourself and the PCOS hasn't affected your fertility.
I spent 7 years TTC, lost a fallopian tube from an ectopic pregnancy and with the help of Metformin (a diabetes drug used 'off - license' for PCOS) I conceived. I have an almost two year old asleep next door.

There is SO much that can be done for a woman's hormones.. if you are worried about your ferlity and want to have a baby I would consider starting the journey early to allow for the time it may take. I started at 21 and had a baby at 28.

Best of luck to you x

If you want children, why did you have a vaccine that has not been tested on pregnant women?
Why not wait?
It’s madness the risks healthy people are taking for a virus that is of pretty limited risk to young healthy people.

Kingfisher8 · 11/08/2021 20:53

@FreshFreesias

I had the vaccine because:

1 I wanted to be protected. Just because I’m only late 20’s it doesn’t mean I’m immortal

  1. I wanted to be able to travel. Yup as selfish as it sounds
  2. I don’t want children right now but in a couple of years time…

I missed a period after both pfizer jabs. But they came back afterwards.

BobaFettOnMyBedsideTable · 11/08/2021 20:58

My cycle has been a few days out since the 1st jab and a lot heavier and longer. Had my second jab last week. Hoping they'll settle back down soon.

CorianderBee · 11/08/2021 21:14

It affected my period (skipped one then beaver ones after that). Have been told that illness of any kind can affect them and that's why the vaccine does.

I had my second jab in April and my periods went back to normal last month. I'm 26.

CorianderBee · 11/08/2021 21:15

Heavier* not beaver

Tirediam · 11/08/2021 21:49

I had a 60 day cycle and I’ve been spotting for 5 days now but no sign of a proper period. I had the AZ. No idea what’s going on!

usethedata · 11/08/2021 21:53

Because of the way vaccines work it is very unlikely they would have any long term fertility impact. I understand your concerns because of the PCOS, but don't let the vaccine add to your worries.

EmoIsntDead · 11/08/2021 22:21

Your endometrium is affected/part of your immune system as far as I understand it. Since your immune system is busy making antibodies your cycle can be disrupted. My period was a bit late and unusually light after my 2nd Pfizer jag. But I also I had a 62 day cycle when I was very ill with COVID last year.

The flu jag fucked up my period a couple of years ago. I skipped a period when I had really bad sinusitis. And again when my dad died. It’s a normal response but people are getting hysterical due to all the fear mongering online.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 11/08/2021 22:27

As I understand it, the vaccine affects your periods because the menstrual cycle is very closely tied into your immune system. The immune system is suppressed during ovulation then stronger during the period itself.

The vaccine prompts an immune response which, naturally, disrupts your normal cycle. Then you have another jab 2 months later which throws it even further out of whack. But it can no more affect your fertility than your flu vaccine can.

magicstar1 · 11/08/2021 22:30

My period was due the day of my first vaccine and it never started. I had a bit of spotting just before the second vaccine, but that stopped with the second jab.
First was June, second was July and I still haven’t had a period. Some cramps, tiny bit of spotting but that’s all.

Thehop · 11/08/2021 22:31

I had my second dose in April and haven’t had a normal period since,

SisterBeaverhausen · 11/08/2021 22:35

OP please don't worry. The endometrium contains cells that are part of your immune system. So you may find after vaccines your menstrual cycle can be affected. I always have an odd cycle after a flu jab.

I had a weird cycle after my first vaccine then got pregnant the next cycle. I'm now 26 weeks and she's healthy and happy in there. It won't cause infertility

Oogachuckachopsy · 11/08/2021 23:06

I’ve had two Pfizers. After my first my period was a couple of days early, longer, but heavier at the beginning. After my second vaccine it was a day late (so basically on time), normal heaviness, just a bit longer. I’m tracking and ovulated both times. It doesn’t take much to knock a period off course. Get the jab and fear not.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 11/08/2021 23:56

Mine has been every 35 days since my 1st jab. Bastard. I normally only come on every 2 or 3 months, my average cycle is 72 days. I've got the right hump about it.

littledrummergirl · 12/08/2021 00:58

Mine are screwed up. After the second vaccine I had three in 2 months and although I've been feeling as though it is due to start for the last week I'm still waiting.
I'm going wild camping tomorrow for a few days though so I think I know when it will start.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 12/08/2021 01:13

A girl i know is now pregnant after having her 2 doses, if that is any comfort at all.
