To take DS out of school for two weeks for holidays?

When Covid settles down and we can get into Florida without too much hassle. Hopefully later this year or early next year. We haven’t gone away for the last two years so have been waiting to do a big holiday.

He is starting secondary school in September but he’s well above average in all subjects so I don’t think it’ll impact him that much.

I’d also rather go on hols outside of school hols, as it’s less busy now, that DS is the only DC we’ll potentially get fined for (other DC out of school). It’ll be cheaper so we’ll save more than the £120 anyway!

Thinking of doing it every year from now actually.

Would it BU?

It's a mute point. The US aren't going to want us as tourists.
However, no you shouldn't take your secondary school child out of school for 2 weeks so that you queue less at Disney...

PrincessNutella · 12/08/2021 13:43

I agree, Adrianna. Alsoand I say this, again, as an Americanwhy would you want to spend a single penny on the evil, retrogade shitshow that is Florida in 2021?

VeryQuaintIrene · 12/08/2021 14:46

@PrincessNutella

I agree - don't see the attraction (right now) at all and wouldn't want to give the loathesome DeSantis even half a penny.

MsTSwift · 12/08/2021 14:48

Moot point not mute point

Off topic - love your username, Quaint Irene. My favourite books!

VeryQuaintIrene · 12/08/2021 16:20

Not a strange response at all. He's governor of the state that stands to make money from people's holidays there and he has actually forbidden mask-wearing in schools or mandates for it, not just discouraged it - actually forbidden it. Some school districts are simply ignoring it. See also his policy on vaccines. I think that is a crime, not to mention the predictably high rates of covid in FL right now. So no thanks.

@ Maireas Thanks - mine too.

Maireas · 12/08/2021 16:22

I didn't know that about Florida! Sounds awful.

its not true

Maireas · 12/08/2021 16:44

What's the truth, @QueenBee52?

NumberTheory · 12/08/2021 16:44

Not this year in Floria because COVID isn’t settling. If your DS is not just a bit ahead, but also learns easily and easily catches up under his own steam then I’d consider it in the first two years of secondary., I’d overlap one week with a half term, though. I wouldn’t do it in exam years.

Most American kids are back in school by mid-august, and the last two weeks of the summer holiday are slightly less busy normally so might be worth looking then instead (though with Florida that might be made up for by all the Brits!). Also, they don’t have a big Easter holiday so that’s a good time to go.

QueenBee52 · 12/08/2021 16:51

@Maireas

What's the truth, *@QueenBee52*?

not the rubbish being spouted in here 🤣

genie82 · 12/08/2021 17:20

I agree with many of the comments above. Sure, it may not affect them academically very much, but they will miss out on making friends, seating plans and likely find themselves very behind socially. Future years may be a different matter, but I never would've taken my DD out during this transitional period.

@QueenBee52 care to share your obviously better informed data?

WHAT

LIES?

PrincessNutella · 12/08/2021 19:19

Of course the state economy is fueled by money brought in by tourism. And the governor's popularity is bolstered by having a lot of money flowing into the state's coffers. He personally might not get rich, but his chances of being reelected are higher if people pretend that Florida is not the Covid hotspot that it is and fly into this disease vector and spend their money there.

VeryQuaintIrene · 12/08/2021 19:30

QueenBee52, you are Ron DeSantis in disguise and I claim my five pounds.

Quick google will settle it, and I note you haven't managed to find a proper source refuting the claim.

He's now threatening to dock officials' salaries for daring to impose masks. Link here flaglerlive.com/166719/desantis-threatens-paychecks/
