Aibu re delivery and tradesmen stopping their vans/lorries in the middle of our road???

Several times this past week, delivery men and tradesmen have just left their vehicles in the middle of the road whilst they carry out what they need to carry out. We live in a cul de sac, so there is only one way in and out. Its a fairly quiet residential road.
Last week a huge lorry just stopped in the middle of the road and unloaded sand and bricks. It was 5pm and I was just on the way to the nursery run. I waited in my car for several minutes and very politely told the lead man that I needed to get out of the road and he couldn't just stop there.. He threw a baby strop and acted like I was the unreasonable one. Its so frustrating. I've just stepped out the house and seen another man stopping in the middle of the road and unloading sand bags. Two cars behind him and he's shovelling sand from one bag to another.
It's so bloody annoying..

So how would you like them to deliver their goods then?

It’s a pain, it’s a pain for them having to deliver to residential areas, but they are doing their jobs.

Mayorquimby2 · 11/08/2021 15:52

It's fucking infuriating tbf

Thunderbad8 · 11/08/2021 15:53

There's adequate parking further down the road. I've seen other delivery drivers park and deliver. It's just laziness.

You told him he couldn't stop there? Unless he was doing something illegal, as opposed to legal but a little inconvenient then I'm not surprised he wasn't impressed.

But they aren’t delivering down the road. They need to be able to unload where they are delivering or do you expect them to walk building supplies up the road Hmm
Thunderbad8 · 11/08/2021 15:55

So you wouldn't take issue to this if you had to get out of the road? You'd just sit and wait?

We're other delivery drivers delivering building supplies and walking supplies of bricks down the street from the parking spot you consider to be appropriate?

Building materials usually get delivered to the place they're needed, not half way down the street.

Again, would you just sit and wait for them to finish without feeling frustrated?...

Sirzy · 11/08/2021 15:58

Yes I would and I have because they are doing a job, I may politely ask them if they get to a good point to could they just pull forward so I could pass if I was really desperate but generally I sit and wait

Thunderbad8 · 11/08/2021 16:00

That's what i did, I waited and then I said politely that I needed to get out the road and that he couldn't stop there and could he park either on the other side of the road so I could go around him whilst going up on the kerb or parking further up.

OP posts:
Potatoy · 11/08/2021 16:00

I think its fine for them to park as long as they move if you need to get out and you let them know you need to get out. They shouldn't throw a strop It's a cul de sac they can't trap you in for as long as they like.

Wimpeyspread · 11/08/2021 16:01

I would feel frustrated but it is what it is. You can’t carry pallets of building materials down a road, they have to be offloaded where they’re wanted. Unless you live on a building site, it’s not going to happen every day, is it? I think you are being a bit ridiculous
Potatoy · 11/08/2021 16:01

I wouldn't insist they move now, but I'd expect them to move within a few minutes if being asked

LolaSmiles · 11/08/2021 16:01

Yes I'd sit and wait. They're doing a job and building materials need to be delivered to the property they're needed. If I was getting really pushed for time then I'd ask if they would reverse/roll forward a few metres so I can get past.

I'd certainly not tell them they can't stop there.

Sirzy · 11/08/2021 16:02

But when they are mid delivery it’s not that easy to just stop and move. And they could stop there nothing you have said suggests they where breaking any parking restrictions

I didn't ask straight away, I waited several minutes and it was quite clear I needed to get out the road. He could've parked on the other side of the road with half the vehicle in the road and on the kerb, I could've maneuvered around him and I would've also had to go on the kerb to get round but at least I could've got out. Several delivery drivers do that also.

UnsuitableHat · 11/08/2021 16:04

I’d feel frustrated, but it’s one of those things. Our road isn’t a cul de sac but it’s narrow enough for any vehicle to block the road if it stops, and you just have to wait really - although not unreasonable to ask how long they’ll be if it drags on.

LolaSmiles · 11/08/2021 16:04

I agree sirzy.
It's a sort of parking thread so I'm waiting for the drip feed.

Disrespected · 11/08/2021 16:06

I once had a carpet delivered /fitted. They parked in the middle of the road. It's a very busy cut through. They took carpet upstairs and I assumed they'd then move the van out the way. Nope. So I said if you don't want to park van down the street you're welcome to block my drive.
They said nah its OK well only be 20 min! Literally no traffic could get past. Lots of beeping etc.
As I say it's a busy cut through Rd and on a bend. Dangerous! I closed my front door so the other drivers didn't know they were in here.

Scottishskifun · 11/08/2021 16:06

This is daily on my road everyone accepts it and just gets on with it!
If I have to be somewhere in a rush then I park elsewhere and walk especially on bin lorry days!

Thunderbad8 · 11/08/2021 16:07

Clearly I'm unreasonable for wanting to get out the road and pick my daughter up from nursery...
A) I wasn't rude when I asked.
B) there was adequate room to park on the other side of the road without blocking the entire road

OP posts:
alltheemptyfields · 11/08/2021 16:07

Fair enough they stop because they have to stop,
but throwing a strop because you need to leave? He was a rude idiot.

alltheemptyfields · 11/08/2021 16:07

then of course he was completely unreasonable.

LolaSmiles · 11/08/2021 16:07

You want a huge lorry that's delivering building materials to go half on the kerb and half on the road?

When we've had heavy supplies delivered the lorry is large, has a crane arm and they put out stabilisers at the side of the lorry so materials can be unloaded safely. The 'other delivery drivers do...' is irrelevant because it's highly unlikely the other delivery drivers were delivering building supplies.

hulahooper2 · 11/08/2021 16:09

For building type deliveries I think yabvu to complain
