Calor Gas - AIBU

Has anyone any experience of Calor Gas? We've found a house we really like, but it's got Calor Gas as no option for mains gas. My DH wants to go for it and doesn't think it's an issue but it's really put me off. The thought of having to faff around with it and not actually knowing how it works has put me off an otherwise great house. AIBU?

I’m going out in a limb here. Don’t most houses on calor also use oil? So the gas would be just for cooking on? And maybe hot water?

If so it shouldn’t be too bad most houses have a double hook up so it auto switches when empty to the other tank. Then you buy a new tank.

I've got calor gas, just for my hob. I have no idea why the people who previously owned the house put it in, rather than an electric hob. It is no hassle though. I've lived here 8 years, and changed a bottle once.

We have a second home in a village where there is no mains gas. It's not that unusual. I'm not trying to stealth boast btw re second home, just that I can compare the two!
Everyone either has an oil tank or LPG tank. We have the latter as it's buried in the ground, so not an eyesore that you have to fence off.
Ours is fitted with a device that notifies Calor when it gets to a certain percentage and they come out and fill it up automatically, so no hassle. (This wasn't always the case! 🥶)
My only complaint is that I don't think the gas hob gets as hot as our one in our main home which is mains gas (thinking of changing to an induction hob as a result), but the boiler works absolutely fine.
Also not connected to mains sewage, but that's a completely different story!

It depends on size of tank to above poster.

If it's a large permanent tank then that will do everything the house needs.

Some people with oil systems will have a couple of 47kg bottles just for cooking as that's their preference.

We have an oil system for heating and washing then electric oven for cooking.

If you like the house I wouldn't see it as a deal-breaker it'll just be more expensive than mains gas by how much I don't know?

There's quite a few options with rural properties or properties without mains connections.

Is it for cooking or heating or both, OP?

JacquelineCarlyle · 11/08/2021 15:18

Thanks all - not as much of a worry as I first thought then. We had oil heating when I grew up in NI (no mains gas option) but my parents dealt with that, so no real experience. I just remember the oil tanker turning up every so often but usually after my dad would have had a rant about the price and getting a delivery slot!

Is it really bad environmentally or no worse than mains gas?
