Im day 2 of no smoking.
Its gone from now and again smoker last year to full time at the xmas lockdown and since .
Yesterday I've felt irritable and anxious and had to go to bed early .
Today I'm anxious again, irrirable and tired.
Can anyone give me a boost and tell me this is temporary and I'll feel fine in a few days?
The devil part of my brain is telling me to just buy ciggies and all this will go away!!

In just the time you have not smoked, your blood oxygen levels have raised and excess carbon monoxide has been reduced by half to near 100%. You should be able to taste things a bit better now too! Is there something you could do when you start to feel anxious, with your hands or mouth? Eg make a cup of tea, do some knitting, etc.

writingsonthewall · 11/08/2021 14:28

It will be the best thing you ever did. You will be so so glad to be free of it. It's hard but worth it. Keep going.

fairycakes1234 · 11/08/2021 14:31

download alan carr book, its fantastic, i stopped years ago after reading this. You wont even have a craving after it. You will be walking around delighted with yourself. Honestly :)

ILoveFlumps · 11/08/2021 14:36

@Maydaybankholiday

Thanks for the encouragement!! It's keeping me going. I've got a vape with 3mg nicotine but I can't see it's making a difference tbh. Might be a good alternative when drinking though I was thinking
You need to start with 6mg in your vape. After a week or so you'll be able to decrease it. I've not smoked cigarettes for nearly 2 weeks now, and am using the vape. I started on 6mg for a few days and am now on 3mg. Keep going OP, you can do it!
Maydaybankholiday · 11/08/2021 19:27

Right I've just ordered some 12mg and some 6mg
Ive got plenty 3 and 0 here so I'm going to work my way down week to week.
So far the idea of 'going for a fag' isn't too strong but I feel like I've got depression it's mental!!!

Well done! I gave up 10 years ago, never miss it and hate the smell now. I don’t know how I afforded it either.
Your skin and teeth will thank you.

Chamomileteaplease · 11/08/2021 19:33

Keep reminding yourself that feeling shit is perfectly normal! It will pass. I hope you have a balance of nice things to do and some rest. Look after yourself during this time Smile.

I always remember Alan(?) Carr and his stop smoking book when he said "you only smoke because you smoke" ie get rid of the physical addiction which he said passes in 24 hours and then the rest is psychological - your body no longer needs it.

I would recommend the book but he suggests you keep smoking til you've finished the book which is hard if you've already stopped!

Oh and he had another bit I remember where he had told his wife he had given up but he had secretly started again. One night she had gone to bed and he had a cigarette but so that she wouldn;t smell it he knelt in front of the fireplace and puffed it up the chimney Grin. He suddenly thought to himself " what the fuck am I doing? this is ridiculous!"

I wish you well - from a relieved and very happy ex-smoker. It is worth it.

DelphiniumBlue · 11/08/2021 19:36

Keep going. You've got through the hardest bit. Now it's habit rather than physical withdrawal to deal with.
My tips: don't have cigarettes, ashtrays, lighters or anything associated with smoking in your house or car. Don't mix with smokers for a few weeks, don't put yourself in the way of temptation.
Find something to do with your hands, eg knitting. Do physical exercise every time you get the urge to smoke. Do things you can't do whilst smoking, eg have a long bath, go to cinema, sit in a cafe.
Put an amount equivalent to what you would have spent on smoking in a jar and watch it build up, then spend it every few weeks on a luxury you wouldn't otherwise have / I found that I could afford new shoes every month from the money I didn't spend on cigarettes- that might not float your boat, but do something for you with that money.
Well done and keep it up!

TreadLightly3 · 11/08/2021 19:38

I’m a reformed 20 a day and love being a non-smoker now. Best advice I got was when you feel like cigarette take 3 deep breaths. It really does help cause you get a bit of a rush! Also vaping 12mg then lowering the nicotine over time helped me get free. Good luck and good on you!!

itsgettingwierd · 11/08/2021 19:44

If vaping doesn't work use the nicotine losengers.

All the supermarkets do their own brands now and they are cheap.

They take half hour to suck so take your mind of it and give you a quick hit of nicotine.

snowy0wl · 11/08/2021 19:52

Well done OP. My Dad was a heavy smoker. We begged him for years to give up and eventually he did. He went cold turkey about 20 years ago. It was tough but he feels so much better for it. You can do it!

Ladyface · 11/08/2021 19:53

Keep going! Your future self will thank you. You can do this!

cptartapp · 11/08/2021 19:54

Look how awful the end of life is for people and their families with dementia.
Smoking can be a massive contributory factor to that, in addition to all the more commonly associated vascular diseases and cancers.

inmyslippers · 11/08/2021 19:59

Picture yourself as a none smoker. It does get easier! I got a buzz off feeling the craving, acknowledging it and then letting it pass

readwhatiactuallysay · 11/08/2021 20:07

It is such a great feeling when you have nailed it.

You feel healthier, your skin improves massively and you dont stink.
You dont have to find "the best place" to have a ciggie so as not to offens, now you are no longer the social leper!!

Keep going it is massively worth it !!

Speakuptomakeyourselfheard · 11/08/2021 20:56

My DH has been a smoker since his teens, he is now 60, and is suffering Claudication which is a severe problem with his circulation, if he doesn't cut out the fags, they WILL AMPUTATE HIS LEG!! This is surely a good enough reason to quit, isn't it?

flipflopslap · 11/08/2021 21:17

Good for you OP!

I work with smokers and everyone wishes they'd quit earlier.
Make this one count 💪

PunchedTit4ASoul · 11/08/2021 21:28

This. I gave up 4 years ago this week. I have no idea how I afforded it. I did vape initially but the cost and the idea of switching one bad habit for another put me off. I tell myself I haven't really quit and am seeing how long I can go between cigs. Grin

PunchedTit4ASoul · 11/08/2021 21:36

DelphiniumBlue I agree with this My tips: don't have cigarettes, ashtrays, lighters or anything associated with smoking in your house or car. Don't mix with smokers for a few weeks, don't put yourself in the way of temptation

I turned down an offer to return to the club I worked at as the only way you got a rest was to go for a smoke. I loved working there but too risky. I still get cravings and don't mind the smell.

coffeeschmoffee · 11/08/2021 21:38

I gave up in 2016 and have never touched one since. I used to feel so paranoid about the smell on my clothes, it's great never to worry about that again. You can do it OP!

Hohofortherobbers · 11/08/2021 21:39

You've done the hardest work now, it will get easier, don't set yourself back and have to quit all over again, good luck!!!

Spidey66 · 11/08/2021 22:34

I used patches initially which did help. But I knew I'd conquered it when about 6 weeks in, in error I forgot to put a patch on and didn't notice till I got ready for bed. The next day i accidntally on purpose forgot again and it got easier after that.

It duud help though that when I stopped (Feb) we were still in lockdown so no trips to the pub!

Spidey66 · 11/08/2021 22:36

The smell on clothes and hair (or lack of) is great. I'm washing my hair and clothes less.

Pinkandblueslushpuppy · 12/08/2021 10:39

Well done OP. I'm on day 2 of no smoking today! I also have a vape - don't think I could have come this far without it. I'm looking forward to feeling healthier and to having a healthier bank account! We've got this! Good luck x
