Is son ill?

To start with ds has additional needs so can't always explain how things are. He also has anxiety.
So, ds (8) has complained of having a pain in his chest a couple of times in the last few weeks. Since last night he has said it feels like their is a lump when he breathes and he has to breath "over it" . He isn't gasping for breath but he is doing lots of deep breathes but they are slow and not gaspy. He's also drinking a lot (don't know of this is connected. )
Hes managing to play on his switch Hmm and ive given him some hay-fever medicine just incase but he's not his usual manic self. Any help would be appreciated please

That’s actually exactly how I feel a month on from coronavirus. He’s described it to a tee. Right down to the needing water (I feel like I don’t make saliva anymore).

I think you’ll know if he’s ill, keep doing what you already are - watch for temp etc and letting him have quiet time. It’s stressful trying to read kids for sure!

Balonzette · 11/08/2021 11:08

I clicked 'YABU' because I really don't like it when people take risks with their kids (or their own) health and ask online instead of going to a doctor. I strongly don't believe it's possible to waste a doctor's time, especially when the difference between seeing a doctor or not can be the difference between mild and serious illness. Something is not right with your son. Serious or not, we can't say as we aren't doctors. If he's unable to breathe comfortably and feels like something is obstructing his breathing, and if he isn't himself, you need to take him to a doctor. It's probably nothing but why take the risk?

delilabell · 11/08/2021 11:17

@kimsdeals. Forgot to say I've done a lateral flow test on him. Hope you improve soon Flowers
@Balonzette I totally get your point and would think the same but his anxiety means he's thought he was having a heart attack, had cancer, had covid and asthma in the last 48 hours so I'm trying to downplay things as much as possible. If I mentioned drs he'd feel he'd got one of these and become hysterical so I have to be very careful with how I deal with him. Thank you for replying though.

Have you called the doctor ?? That’s where I would start rarther then mumsnet

delilabell · 11/08/2021 11:22

@Zzzzzzxxx if you'd have read my other posts you would understand why.

Definitely get him seen today. It may well be nothing but the deep breathing combined with the drinking more would make me concerned about diabetes. When patients with uncontrolled diabetes develop ketoacidosis they do something called Kussmall breathing which means they take much deeper breaths.

ikeepseeingit · 11/08/2021 11:26

Just take him to a doctor OP. Better safe than sorry x

delilabell · 11/08/2021 11:29

I've phoned the drs and they've said no appts left and to phone 111 if I'm worried. Now got a hysterical ds too. Do I phone 111? I have noone else to ask

Globus syndrome is linked to anxiety, I've had it feels like a ball in your throat. Mine sometimes felt like grit or hair but there was nothing there!

GreenTortoise · 11/08/2021 11:34

Of course you phone 111. Hope he feels better soon.

TheVolturi · 11/08/2021 11:38

I have anxiety, and did as a child as I had a very hectic upbringing. I can remember being very young and feeling like I couldn't breathe, and feeling like I had to take an extra deep breath in. Now I know that this was my anxiety but as a child it was scary.

FartnissEverbeans · 11/08/2021 11:39

What @Ugzbugz said! I had this and I went to numerous drs, had stuff shoved down my throat and up my nose and it turns out it’s psychosomatic. Once I knew that it actually cleared up as I had been so stressed out about being sick!

ExpressDelivery · 11/08/2021 11:40

Did you need to tell DS you were calling the doctor?

If he's not himself, in addition to the other symptoms he's describing, yes call 111.

delilabell · 11/08/2021 11:48

@ExpressDelivery he has anxiety. He even follows me to the toilet!
I thibk you are all right about the anxiety. He isn't constantly doing the breathing it looks like it's just when he remembers. I also think he might have a bit of hay-fever.

Anything breathing related should be looked at by a professional ASAP as it could be a sign of something serious. Hope he's ok.

GreenTortoise · 11/08/2021 21:37

How did you get on and hope your son is feeling better.

delilabell · 11/08/2021 21:57

Thank you for asking. It was anxiety. All came out about how their had been a situation and he thought hed get in trouble about it.
