To think this is an unreasonable wage

I recently advertised for a cleaner to do a few hours a week, managed to find a great one and she's invaluable to me now. One 'company' did message me to say they charged £18 an hour, I politely declined as I felt it was too much. Didn't think much of it until tonight when I've seen the same person looking for someone to join her team for £7 an hour. I looked up the 'company' it isn't registered.. am I right in feeling this is an unfair wage when they are asking for £18 an hour? Depending on the age of the applicant I don't think this is even minimum wage Confused

That's capitalism.

ohthestruggles · 10/08/2021 21:41

I wanted to message her and ask how she can justify it to be honest, I might.

It's not min wage for adults

Jumpingintosummer · 10/08/2021 21:42

Her response will be insurance, overheads, advertising, tax, pension contributions etc etc etc…

I do agree if under minimum wage it is completely wrong.

On the difference between wage and what clients pay an employer has to pay
-employers NI
-pension
-holiday
-admin related expenses
-travel expenses between locations

  • advertising expenses
-cleaning products depending upon the service
  • themselves/profit

I am sure there are more I just can't think of them right now.

Do you mean the business isn't registered with companies House? Only those who wish to be a limited liability company have to be registered. Any business should be registered with HMRC for tax but that isn't a public register.
But yes my main concern over that business is the paying below minium wage.

converseandjeans · 10/08/2021 21:43

That is a poor wage - I would call them out on it!

Antiquestuff · 10/08/2021 21:46

Doesn’t matter what the overheads of the business that’s less than NMW and therefore illegal.

RaininSummer · 10/08/2021 21:46

Well i agree that 18 an hour is a lot for a cleaner and 7 for the actual cleaner is a bit mean but its no different to the teaching agencies who charge schools 180 a day and pay the supply teacher 80.

Sparklfairy · 10/08/2021 21:54

I wouldn't message her, I'd actually report her to HMRC. At £7/hr she's probably paying cash in hand and getting £11/hr per 'employee' for doing sod all.

I used to run a cleaning company and I know the costs involved, but this is pure exploitation.

Antiquestuff · 10/08/2021 21:55

@RaininSummer it’s not ‘a bit mean’ to pay a cleaner £7 p/h it’s plain wrong!
Also unless a supply teacher is doing upwards of 8.5 hrs work per day then, yes £80 is ‘a bit mean’ but at least it’s (just about) legal.

Supersimkin2 · 10/08/2021 21:57

Report to HMRC

PlanDeRaccordement · 10/08/2021 22:03

If the person is aged 16-20, £7/hr is not below NMW.

I agree it’s a low wage and think there shouldn’t be a lower NMW for younger people as that is age discrimination. Should be equal pay for equal work regardless of sex, age, etc.

£18/hr isn’t that high to be fair for a client to pay given the overheads, pension, supplies, transport and need to pay non cleaning office staff.

Homemadearmy · 10/08/2021 22:06

Its the minimum wage for under 21

ohthestruggles · 10/08/2021 22:07

From what I could see she has herself and two employees, I doubt they have office staff.

Supply teaching in England (outside London) is £100-£160 per day. Based on an 8hr day that's £12.50 - £20 per hour
