You get a phone call from A, who you've worked with in the past, and they want to offer you a job. This is fantastic because A is an unfailingly brilliant colleague, and the job itself is something you're very good at. Not a life-changing career opportunity, but fun and enjoyable and worthwhile.

Browsing A's organisation's website, however, you spot that A's boss B is advertising a job which might be even more interesting, and certainly carries a more responsibility and challenge and onward career prospects: it will be very, very competitive though, and you'd be interviewing against people ten or fifteen years your junior flying in from across the world. If you apply to work with B though, A may have the rescind their job offer.

YABU: Stick with A's job. You know you'll enjoy it.
YANBU: Apply for B's job. It's a huge risk, but it would probably be worth it if you get it.

If you want to leave your current job v badly then stick with A.
If you arent bothered about possibly losing out to other competitors then apply for B and stick friend who wanted you for A down as a referee.
Although i would personally apply for both A&B as it would be pretty shallow to remove offer just because you apply for something else. Good luck. Hope it all works out for you.

Go with A -- you have a good idea of what that team culture is going to be like. There may be other opportunities with B later, if the org is a place you want to remain.

bobandhisburgers · 10/08/2021 17:16

I'd go with A. Enjoying your work and getting on well with colleagues trumps more competitive career prospects for me.

fabulousathome · 10/08/2021 17:19

Discuss with A? They may have some insight.

UnGoogled · 10/08/2021 17:24

Are you sure job A would be rescinded if you went for B? I would probably take the risk, if I still had a decent job at the end, regardless.

AgileSlug · 10/08/2021 17:35

I don't know for sure that applying for B would mean I lost A. But without having signed a contract yet with A, I couldn't stop them from offering the job to someone else.

UPDATE

I applied for B's job, and had a complete anxiety-related meltdown mid-interview and therefore totally **ed up the whole thing: unsurprisingly, they appointed someone else.

Meanwhile, the T&Cs for A's job changed, meaning I could no longer take it.

A lose:lose scenario.

Sad

Did the t&Cs for As job change because you went for B first?

NiceTwin · 30/10/2021 07:30

Too late now but I'd have gone for A. Being happy in your work is a big thing....I think it can make or break a job.

HalzTangz · 30/10/2021 07:33

Too late now also but I would have took A's job. Then side stepped into another department

Sorry OP :-(

how / why did the t&c change?

AgileSlug · 30/10/2021 09:17

"how / why did the t&c change?"

I have no way of knowing. Some sort of organisational bureaucracy, and whether B is involved I cannot guess.
