To eat this chicken

Chicken smells a bit like chlorine-otherwise in date and seems ok, no obvious slime or grey colour, been in fridge a few days waiting to be roasted . Don’t want to bin it as it’s a waste but obviously don’t want to poison myself either! No smell of the sea or typical smell I would associate with bad chicken, have it in the oven an hour now and no awful smell but feel a bit wary nonetheless!
Anyone know better than me is this sounding ok?usually chicken just dosent smell of anything so wanted to ask In a high traffic area!
Thank you!

I wouldn’t eat meat that smells of chlorine YABU

Well the chlorine is a normal chicken smell and it’s fish that would start smelling fishy so I wouldn’t, no.

Yummymummy2020 · 10/08/2021 13:02

Great thank you I’ll bin it!!!

Do you have or know of a dog? Dogs can eat cooked out of date chicken.

LazyMareofEastown · 10/08/2021 13:06

I play fast and loose with use by dates (had smoked salmon 4 days past its use by for breakfast yesterday) but chlorine scented roast chicken?

Hell no 🤢

I tried that with mine - just a tiny bit out of date, not horrible or smelly or anything. Both dogs got the runs overnight, and neither woke me up in time......

Packaged fresh meat often smells a bit strange when opened - it’s the accumulation of gases which have built up inside the packaging. The smell should disperse quickly and the meat will be absolutely fine to eat. You will presumably be thoroughly cooking it anyway.

If you have a dog just cook it ,not burn it,until it's totally dried out,no flesh or juice whatsoever and give it as a chew.

Oh dear!

No I don't think I'd chance it to be honest 😬
I know it's a waste, but I'd rather bin it, than be ill.

Comtesse · 10/08/2021 15:52

It’s in date, cook it properly, would be silly to chuck it out.

BrutusMcDogface · 10/08/2021 15:54

Don’t they wash chicken with chlorine, nowadays?! Sorry if I sound dim but I don’t eat it. Just remember hearing something about brexit and chlorinated chicken.

Pollymollydolly · 10/08/2021 16:07

I wouldn’t feed my dogs chicken that I wouldn’t eat!

I’m afraid if I had doubts then I’d throw it, I’m not keen on food waste but prefer it to food poisoning (for me or the dogs)

Pollymollydolly · 10/08/2021 16:09

Just to add, I rely on my nose not dates. Food can be off even if it’s in date - and can be fine even if it’s out of date. Use by/best before dates are a fairly recent thing and I prefer to use my nose.

StapMe · 10/08/2021 16:18

I'm pretty slapdash about use by dates, and have been known to evict the blue furry bits from jam and stuff like that. I always use the sniff test and if I have any doubt whatsoever about anything I don't eat it. If you are asking for advice, you're doubting it, so bin it.
