AIBU to wonder what you eat when camping or glamping?!

Arranging a family holiday. Accommodation for 7 nights is a safari tent. Comes with a one ring portable gas hob, a BBQ and an Electric Cool Box. What are we supposed to eat for the week? There's 7 of us.

I don't fancy a BBQ every single night. Chances of rain are probably likely at some point too. We can't eat out every day. That's too expensive for 7 of us. We'll be lucky if we can eat out once during the week. So, what are sort of things can we eat? Really looking forward to the Holiday but very much panicking about the food situation and lack of fridge or oven!

If you camp or glamp what do you eat? Any suggestions?

I make stuff in advance, that can be heated on the hob. For example make a chilli the night before and reheat for dinner the day you arrive, served with nachos or wraps if you can't cook rice at the same time as heating it.

Freeze another meal e.g. casserole which can defrost over the course of the second day and be heated up for dinner on the second day, with bread.

One of my favourite camping memories was my mum buying rotisserie chicken and cooked roast potatoes from a supermarket, boiling some broccoli and carrots on the ring and then sticking gravy granules in the veg water. Camping roast for under £10.

Aldi has portable gas burners for £9.99 this week. Might be worth buying one to take along as a second hob. Sorry if has already been mentioned.

A Risottoish dish is easier than you might think as it can be one pan.

I also do a pan chicken dish for one meal too (chicken thighs or breasts browned, add small potatoes and garlic with a stock to cook nearly away then later add cherry tomatoes and let asparagus cook briefly layed on top) it gets a bit sticky so I let someone else wash up.
I usually make some sort of casserole ahead and use it as my ice pack for my cool box for the first night.

7 of you? Take it in turns. (Sadly prob some kids cant)
Take frozen chili or bolognaise or tagine for first 3 nights. Plus wraps or cous cous

Then heat up on gas ring or fire in a big pot

Other nights: takeaway, eggs some style, filled pasta and stir in sauce, BBQ, fish and chips last night. It's your holiday too

Corned beef hash - tinned corned beef, tinned potatoes, tinned carrots, baked beans. No worries about a fridge. Cube the corned beef, throw everything in a pan & cook. It is really nice ( much nicer than it sounds). We have a campervan & always have the tins on board.

Ps defo take at least two meals frozen. I took steak & ale caserole last time and we ate it two nights in and it was so good! Was still frozen in cool box so had to let it thaw out the coolbox so could easily do that for three nights.

katienana · 11/08/2021 22:01

First night take something you've made, spaghetti bolognese or chilli.
Night 2 - ready made pasta sauce, fresh pasta, tiger bread
Night 3 - fish and chips
Night 4 - bbq (Cook extra and have leftovers the next day)
Night 5 - hot dogs and beans
Night 6 - bbq steak, buy chips from takeaway to have with it
Night 7 - eat out or make a stir fry (you could use cooked chicken or prawns to make this easier).
Another idea is a rotisserie chicken plus salad and bread.
Main thing is you have to go shopping every day probably.

If you have sockets being able to plug in a slow cooker would help

EatingAllThePies · 11/08/2021 22:12

We call a lot with no electric and one portable hob. We often go places where we can buy food though as some campsites cater 1 or 2 nights a week. If not we BBQ at least 2 nights, do hot dogs, beans and bread, tinned soup, sausage rolls, take nachos and dips etc or just picky food. Lots of wraps for lunches. We eat out one day a week either fish and chips if near the beach or a local pub.

Would suggest buying a little 2 ring camping stove. Just so you can have a little more variety with cooking! And maybe an electric cooker. They always come in handy even if you don’t camp often.

Pasta dishes are always good and easy.
Pasta, pesto bacon
Carbonara pasta

Jacket potatoes (on bbq - drizzle olive oil, grind of salt and wrap in tinfoil) with beans and cheese or chilli and cheese (batch cook chilli before you go and freeze)
Spaghetti Bol - again pre cook / freeze before you go and just boil spaghetti
Hotdogs with the full works
Sheps pie - pre cooked / freeze. Just boil potatoes for mash and add a scoop of mash to sheps pie mix

Cheat!
Jar of sweet and sour sauce. Chicken and rice. Very simple.
Or jar of curry sauce, chicken and rice

Eating and cooking outside is the best. Hope you have a lovely time!

SundaySheAteChocolate · 11/08/2021 22:48

Cold cooked salmon, bagged salad and crusty bread.

KidneyBeans · 11/08/2021 22:57

Fry ups
Bacon butties
Egg butties
Beans on bread
Spaghetti hoops
Sausage butties
Beans and egg with potato waffles/hash browns
Beans and sausages
Pasta and sauce
One pot chilli

fmpc · 11/08/2021 23:06

So first night a standard burger and sausage bbq

Second night a pot of pre made bolagnese or chilli, which I bring along frozen, so just ready to eat on the second night

After that

Indian style BBQ
Chicken breasts marinated in tandoori spices and natural yogurt, then barbecued
Naan bread
Spicy potatoes (baby potatoes boiled, drain, then fry onions, garlic, chillies on gas ring, add premade spice mix of cumin seeds, crushed coriander seeds, cardamom seeds, then mix in cooked potatoes
Served with mixed salad and yoghurt mixed with mango chutney

Morning after, I re-fry any leftover potatoes, add eggs into the middle and let them cook/set in the middle of the potatoes and serve for breakfast - probably my favourite camping breakfast

Middle Eastern Style BBQ
Chicken breasts mixed with harisa and bbq’d
Pitta bead, bought hummus and bowls of peppers, olives, feta, red onions, cucumber, baby tomatoes, olive oil and red wine vinegar

Mexican Style BBQ
Chicken breasts mixed with fajita spice mix and olive oil, bbq’d
Grated cheese, bought guacamole, sour cream, jalepenos, salsa, iceberg lettuce, tortillas
Everyone puts together their own wraps
