Cockerel

Our neighbour now has a cockerel.

They aren't a farm but we do live fairly rurally in a small row of houses in a village. Our gardens are maybe 10m x 10m so not massive and it's definitely a residential area.

He's been cockledoodlelooing since 5 this morning literally he other side of my fence.

Aibu to think this is out of order?

It's definitely annoying and I feel for you but 'cockledoodlelooing' is a great word.

Google your local council & cockerels & see if there are any guidelines you could print off and stick through their door.

Some houses have covenants that state they can't keep chickens/cockerels, is there even a slight possibility that yours might? This would piss me right off. Are any of your other neighbours bothered, do you know?

Tumbleweed101 · 09/08/2021 17:54

Ask them to get a rooster box so it overnights in the dark. They can then be let out at a better time for neighbours

I feel very invested in this thread 🐓🇫🇷

He may shut up if shut in at night.
Or may not.
I pity you, tbh, but you may get lucky & have a relatively quiet new neighbour.

Unfortunately they are not nice people and there will be no point saying anything. It will achieve nothing but nastiness.

I just needed to have a moan really.

They regularly lose their animals to the local foxes or get bored of them and give them away so he may not be an issue very long.

Well, this morning we did not hear him until 7 am which was not so bad. But he's been marching up and down doing his thing all day. He must be exhausted!

How did you get on? I have one In my street and it's driving me slightly crackers

Elphame · 19/05/2024 14:29

I admit to letting out a (mostly) silent cheer when next door's chicken run was invaded by a fox to the detriment of its inhabitants.

I could hear the cockerel all over the house (and it was a big detached one) and it woke me every morning without fail. Thankfully they never replaced the chickens.

JMSA · 19/05/2024 15:18

I can't believe that people would do this and not even run it by their neighbours first!

howfartospar · 01/06/2024 18:01

I've been to see my neighbours a few times but they won't answer the door. I think they must know I'm gonna moan 😁 I could go Environmental health or write them a letter but I'd prefer to have an adult discussion. Any suggestions please?

Shardonneigghhh · 01/06/2024 18:11

This is potentially a bit of a sensitive situation, as cockerels are notoriously difficult to rehome. More often or not, a situation with complaining neighbours ends up being a death sentence for the bird.
