To want to experience a floatation tank?

Hi ....just that really! Has anyone ever tried this? I am looking to reduce tension in my neck and shoulders.
Can anybody recommend any places in London?

I got one from groupon and didn’t enjoy the experience. I felt quite tense around my head / neck as to properly relax your neck takes your head very far down so it’s nearly underwater (or maybe I just have a massive potato head)

I’d spend the money on a proper head and neck massage personally

I love them but they can be really uncomfortable on the neck!
Good places will offer and flotation pillow the helps but even so it can be quite painful.

Agree with @Shirleyphallus. If you’re in discomfort, get a proper massage, a flotation tank won’t help. And I certainly didn’t find it pleasurable.

I'm desperate to try one! I love floating. If I go swimming I don't burn any calories as I just like to float! A floatation tank sounds like heaven to me

PercyPiginaWig · 09/08/2021 15:52

Oh I really hated the flotation tank, felt so claustrophobic.
That said OP they do have repeat customers so I hope you find one near you.

I'm a regular floater, I love that but the three first sessions can be a bit challenging. It took several sessions for me to be able to breathe properly.

Its not something that will make you feel good as a one off. Personally, I use it as a kind of therapy, deep meditation and creativity tool.

In London the best place is Floatworks, there's a centre in Vauxhall and another one in Angel.

I've done it a couple of times, quite enjoyed it as an experience - though I think the second was better as you spend a lot of the first trying to get used to it. Not sure how much it would do to fix a bad neck though, massage probably better for tension release

Upamountain43 · 09/08/2021 15:59

I absolutely love flotation mine has a light up top that made it feel I was floating in space.

I am rather claustrophobic but never felt it in the tank.

I second the ideas for a head and neck massage. I had awful recurring sinusitis once, and terrible neck pains another time, and found that the only thing which gave any relief was a really good Indian head massage.

Pinkstegosaurus · 09/08/2021 16:06

Not quite London but Nirvana Spa in Wokingham has a flotation pool which is wonderful.

Shirleyphallus · 09/08/2021 16:13

I'm a regular floater

RincewindsHat · 09/08/2021 16:16

I love floating in water and thought a flotation tank would be amazing but it was so meh. I would take a lovely Indian head massage as a relaxing treatment any day!

Allywill · 09/08/2021 16:19

I did it once and was not that impressed. As others have said much prefer a massage- I didn’t find it relaxing at all. I was also a bit chilly which detracted from the experience but that might just be me as I am one of those people who are always cold and have my bath water like lava!

dreamingbohemian · 09/08/2021 16:20

I tried it once, it was fine but not as relaxing as I had hoped. I found it hard to get my head/neck in a comfortable position, either with the pillow or without.

I would also suggest a massage instead

Letmedowneasy · 09/08/2021 16:24

I love floatation and it really works for me. It's perhaps not as luxurious as you would expect. The salt can go in your eyes and any cuts you have and it's annoying if the water gets on your face.

I go to Floatworks in Angel, it's brilliant, they are passionate about the benefits. I went initially after a slipped disc and found the relief of being weightless for a while so amazing. I find that you really have to work on your breathing and relaxing to make it worthwhile. It would be very easy to lie there and think of your worries but if you can let your mind switch off it's incredible and I actually prefer it over a massage now.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 09/08/2021 16:26

A quick question ; I am afraid of my face going under water - don't mind ears being submerged - would this happen?

BeetleyCarapace · 09/08/2021 16:31

I had a few sessions a couple of years back. I didn't chime with it in the end, like pp I couldn't get comfortable enough to let my mind wander. And the sensation of being shut in the pod thing freaked me out a bit.

I went to Yue Float in Wandsworth. It's in the Battersea Reach development. Quite nice, about quite as nice as Floatworks but (at the time) slightly cheaper.

Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals · 09/08/2021 19:28

I tried a dry flotation tank - thinks it’s like a big cushion filled with water. I found that it was relaxing once I got over my head feeling like it was sinking down but the biggest issue was that I kept falling asleep and waking up with a snore. Not actually very restful.

FunMcCool · 09/08/2021 19:39

I hated it I felt like I was in a coffin I had to leave. My sister loves them though. Everyone is different.

nonotmenotI · 09/08/2021 19:49

I loved it. The place I went to shut down but it was excellent.
