Wedding location has mandatory covid test for 2y/o

We will fly soon to Italy for the wedding of a dear friend. I am a bridesmaid, my DH is the best man.
Italian law requires negative test to enter the country starting from 6 years old.
They also require a covid pass (proof of vaccination or negative test) starting from 12 y/o to enter restaurants, bars, etc.

DH and I are both double jabbed, DS is 2 y/o so we do not need any additional test by law.

The bride informed me yesterday that the wedding location has independently decided to ask for mandatory testing starting from 2 y/o. Without a test result we cannot enter the location.

This is a big problem because:

  • We cannot test DS here because the test result will be expired by then
  • In Italy they only test asymptomatic people if they are older than 12 y/o. They test 6 y/o if requested by the pediatrician. They never test below 6 y/o unless there are symptoms or covid contacts.

I called several testing centers and they told me they never tested someone below 12 yo but "they could try if we sign a liberatory, but they have only adult size swabs". Sure. No thanks.

I called the wedding location and they told me "if I go to the hospital and pretend DS has symptoms I can ask for the test". WTF.

AIBU for planning to go without the test? Can they really stop me and not allow me to enter if this is not required by any law??? What would you do if you were me?

We cannot leave DS here since the wedding is part of a 2 weeks vacation.

They obviously wouldn’t put it in writing though, so I agree that it’s another way to go, ie asking them to put that in writing.

I understand your pain OP. Our son, late teens but

In Italy the tests are done though the nose (unless it has change from last autumn when tested at the airport)

It is 6 days full quarantine as day 1 doesn't count?

Hathertonhariden · 10/08/2021 10:15

Are you staying at the venue? If so do you have to test the 2 yo to stay there? If so I think I'd just write the whole thing off. It's the risk your friends took in going ahead with an overseas wedding in the current climate.

If you are staying elsewhere or don't have to test the 2 yo to stay at the venue then the best option is either to tag team the wedding or one parent not go to the wedding and stay with ds all the time. You then get your family time during the rest of the holiday.

Anyone under the age of 30 can currently get a test in Umbria even without symptoms due to concern about the Delta variant spreading. Can you ask the bride and groom, or even the venue, if they know of ne of the drive through clinics where you can get this done? I’d speak to them anyway though as it does appear to be the green pass they require and this may be an issue as iirc you need an Italian tax code (codice fiscale) which is assigned at birth or upon immigrating to the country in order to obtain the QR code. Explain this to them so as to be certain they will accept a negative test certification without the green pass itself.

OP don’t know if you speak any Italian but here is the article stating under 30s can request a test at any time or show up to a drive through.www.google.it/amp/s/www.umbria24.it/attualita/covid-19-variante-delta-in-umbria-al-67-per-cento-tamponi-gratis-per-under-30-in-attesa-di-vaccino/amp

Regarding the swab, I know that my friend’s kids have been swabbed using adult kits (aged 18 months and 3 years) as the centers here in Campania didn’t have any kits available and they were fine. I’ve been swabbed several times as I have been in and out of hospital (I gave birth mid pandemic) and had been pinged several times before getting my vaccine, and the adult swabs are flexible, much thinner than a cotton swab. No idea if they are the same in UK.

Are you staying at the venue? Personally I think they're being unreasonable and if you have separate accommodation I'd be going on holiday but not to the wedding.

There are pop up testing tents everywhere at the moment due to some minors not yet having had their second vax but needing a green pass for various things (I'm in this situation myself, in Rome on holiday from where I live in Puglia and DD has had one jab only but needs green pass for inside restaurants etc. Going to a pop up testing centre tomorrow to get a QR so we can visit the UK inside things we want to see. Not sure if all the tents do young children, but there are definitely loads of them. €8. Remember too, they're only valid for 48 hours.
