Bikini for a Swimming Lesson?

SephrinaX · 07/08/2021 16:02

I'm due to take my 3 year old for his first swimming lessons soon and I was wondering- what do you wear to the pool? Do most mums wear one pieces? Or bikinis? Wet suits?

If I was on holiday I'd wear a bikini. Maybe I'm being odd, but I just sort of think it might be a bit weird to wear that to a kid's swimming lesson in the North of Scotland? Grin

Grateful to hear what the rest of you do/think!

Just to say for all you tall people, I came across this site the other day while looking for a costume for my (tall) DD.

www.halocline.co.uk/collections/ladies-swimwear

It has quite a few costumes that are cut longer in the body, specifically designed for and tested on tall women. I thought they looked good.

I don't think it's relevant whether it's a one piece or two piece swimming costume. As long as you're comfortable in it and there's no chance of an accidental wardrobe malfunction, that's all that matters.

I'm surprised at all the people making such a distinction between a bikini and a swimming costume. Surely a bikini is just a subset of swimming costumes?

Whatever you'd wear if you were going swimming.

I’ve been wearing a bikini for the last few years since taking my children swimming from 8 weeks and 5 weeks old. It never occurred to me to think of wearing anything else.

I see women at the pool in the UK in bikinis and costumes. There's quite a variety. As long as it's not a thong bikini and not massively revealing, I don't see an issue.

I personally would wear a swimming costume. Either a sporty one or just a nice one piece one. I wouldn't feel 'right' in a bikini unless I was on holiday in the heat.

I used to wear a bikini as I have big boobs, narrow back and big bum/ hips. I just can’t get a one piece to fit properly as it will either be too loose on the back or too small on the bum/hips. I never felt self conscious- they weren’t skimpy string bikinis or anything

Tankinis are the ideal compromise. I’m at least two sizes larger on the bottom, so find a yoga style top and boy shorts convenient and modest.

Please, please do wear a wetsuit. With flippers and a snorkel.

The kids will love it! Grin

I'm tall and do surf shorts or boycut bottoms plus a tank-style swim top.

abstractprojection · 08/08/2021 08:09

I second sporty two pieces for me they are far comfier then a one piece and if you get bottoms that are like shorts you don’t have to worry about your bikini line

rattusrattus20 · 08/08/2021 08:32

one piece is more common but I wouldn't say it's night and day/that two pieces are a rarity as such.

newmumwithquestions · 08/08/2021 08:39

I’m tall and 2 sizes bigger top than bottom half. Swimsuits are not made for my shape.
Just had a look at the link posted above and great to see longer length swimsuits, but ‘light control’ bust isn’t going to cut it sadly.

I’ve always worn a bikini and it is only on Mumsnet that I’ve seen anyone saying bikinis are not covering enough. Trust me I’d flash a lot more of the wrong bits with a swimsuit.
