Hairdresser wages/salary

Posting here for more traffic as I need to make a decision soon in if I do the course or not.

Iv applied to do a hairdressing level 2 course part time for a year starting next month.

Iv been trying to look up roughly how much self employed hair dressers make but I can’t find much info.

I know self employed means it’s not a set wage and depends on hours etc but I was wondering if anyone here who is a hairdresser and is self employed would be able to tell me how much they make a year normally (pre Covid/post Covid) and how many hours they work a week approx to make that.

I also plan to do a hair extension course to be able to fit those too.

I already work part time so will be keeping that job while I train and get experience.

Are you planning on renting a chair within a salon, owning your own business or being a mobile hairdresser going to peoples homes?

Doing it mobile/come to my home or rent a chair.

Owning my own business wouldn’t be realistic any time soon.

Mobile when newt qualified will be difficult as you will need to build a client se and experience.

I would recommend going into a salon first so you can learn via other stylists that are working daily on their own clients so you can gain knowledge and confidence.

I've been in the industry for 26 years and up until lockdown no 1 have always been salaried full time however after this last year my direction is changing as I want more flexibility in my life so will be setting up on my own in my own cabin and expanding my skills into more beauty as well as hair.

I will earn ALOT more money but also will have the flexibility I crave and more time at home.

It's a hard insdustry to be in and I frequently/daily stand solidly with no real breaks and work.

It's physically hard at times but it's also mentally hard however I absolutely love my clients and my job so will always recommend it as a good career Grin

Thanks! Smile

I was thinking of slowly building clients by doing family and friends etc. I wasn’t looking to rush and do it full time any time soon as I already work part time and if I’m honest my OH earns a decent wage and pays most of our bills.

I wonder if I could find somewhere in a salon that offers part time on the days I don’t work currently Grin
